Philips Consumer Products ACT200 MP3 Digital Audio Player (64 MB) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for a portable MP3 player to use at the gym for some time now, and this unit is the first that appears to be geared for the athelete. For the most part the player fits the bill, providing a lightweight unit that fits snuggly into a flexible arm sleeve. Here are the only downsides in my view:
1. The headphones while designed to stay out of the way with a cord that goes down your backside and around to the mp3 player on your arm is a little awkward. Specifically the two earpieces are attached to one another via a plastic arm, which can dislodge if you are doing excercises where you lean your head back.
2. Software setup was not a breeze. It took me a few attempts where my computer rebooted in the middle of accessing the unit for no apparant reason.
3. the headphone connector to the unit is a bit sensitve. I have to wiggle the connector on mine when i attach to the mp3 player to get full stereo sound. Another pair of headphones would probably solve the problem, but it would have been nice to have this work with no problem.
Having said all of this, i am happy with this thing. The only improvement i would make would be a pair of wireless earpieces, but i guess i will have to wait a couple of years before those appear on the market.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this devcie and have had nothing but problems with it. The moment I got it out of the box it started resetting. I thought ok maybe it needs an upgrade. Looked on RCA.com to see if there is a firmware upgrade. Did it....loaded music and same thing. Well trying to get a hold of the RCA to do a warrenty exchange is impossible, well I am getting a refirb one now, lets see how this works. Good luck all....needless to say I a shopping for another devcie, that just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Functional as both a digital music player and a data storage device, the RCA Lyra M10001GB is a great fit for travelers and business professionals alike. Audio-wise, the Lyra's 1 GB of flash memory stores both MP3 and WMA wiles, in addition to supporting music downloads from WMA-compliant DRM services. Listeners will enjoy access to up to 32 hours of WMA music or 640 songs encoded at 64 kbps--enough for all but the longest road or plane trip. Navigation is straightforward thanks to the included MusicMatch Jukebox software, which also offers such functions as Auto DJ (creates precise playlists based on your sorting preferences) and the ability to export MP3 files to WAV format. And because there are no moving parts, the Lyra's music playback simply doesn't skip.
Listening to music is only part of the fun, however. The Lyra also stores data files, such as digital photos, PowerPoint presentations, text documents, and more. It even reads the file name and type on the display, making it easy to recall the files when needed. The data storage in effect turns the Lyra into a mini hard drive, making it a great companion for anyone who needs to transport data from one location to another without wasting a CD-R or hauling along a laptop. It also serves as a nice data overflow device in a pinch, such as when needing to free up space on a digital camera.
The Lyra is compatible with PCs running Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, or XP or Macs running OS X 10.1.5 or higher. To connect, simply open the Lyra's easy-to-use mechanical sliding door, which reveals a direct USB connection. The door keeps dust and dirt from building up on the USB connector and prevents battery degradation. Additional features include six DSP modes (flat, bass, pop, rock, jazz, and EQ); a key lock; a rechargeable NiMH battery; and a full accessory kit with earbud headphones, a neck strap, and a USB cable.
The Lyra measures 4 by 1 by 0.375 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box Digital audio player, headphone, neck strap, rechargeable battery, software CD-ROM, user's manual.

Coby Electronics TF-DVD7107 7-Inch Portable DVD Player Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Before even starting reading this commentary go back and look at the features of this DVD player... Ok did you find it? Yes, it plays DVD+R/RW. If you have ever recorded a DVD only to find your portable would not play it, yup, instant buyer's remorse. This is a HUGE benefit for a DVD player under $100
Beyond recorded +R/RW DVDs, the most important aspects of this basic DVD player are that #1 It has a clear screen, #2 the speakers are good and clear for private play (if you need them louder you are probably disturbing the people around you), #3 it has very good battery life, #4 the controls are easy to use, and #5 it comes with all the accessories you need: DC car adaptor, headphones, and a remote.
If you just want a good, solid DVD player for airplane travel, car trips, or to keep your son or daughter busy in times of need, this is it! If you intend to view movies with someone else, you may want to go with a 10" screen and dual headphones.
I paid around $80 including tax and the CA (ultra liberal state mandated) battery recycling charge for the Coby, and the quality, reliability, and durability have far surpassed the cost! I've experienced the frozen screen syndrome now and then with recorded DVDs, it has skipped once or twice, but I do not know of a portable DVD player that has NEVER done that on occasion, especially with recorded DVD capabilites.
My final word on the Coby, pay the under $100 price and buy a 1 or 2 year replacement plan for $10 for peace of mind. If you are real picky about sound, want the screen to rotate, and care about all the other details... go ahead and spend $200. As for me, it is hard to pay attention to those minor details while sitting in a noisy airport. Spend the $80-$90, save the rest to improve your home system (or get a game system) and buy this one for travel and other away from home use.

Coby DVD-224 Compact DVD Player (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I wanted to be able to watch DVDs from the UK that weren't available in NTSC. So far the Coby has handled everything I've put in it with no trouble. It impressed a friend so much he got one too.
I'm not expecting it to last forever - it is a mega-cheapie after all - but at this price, I can buy a new one every year, and consider it worth it. I haven't found any other box that does multi-region with on-the-fly PAL/NTSC conversion at any price.
UPDATE - I've had my Coby for two years now, and it is still working fine. I have found some commercial DVDs don't play well in it, but it is a fault of the DVD manufacturer, not the player (I work in the industry). Basically, Technicolor don't test for compatability with the software codec used in this box, and frequently the only way to play DVDs duplicated by Technicolor is to go to the Select Scene menu and pick the first scene. It plays fine from there. This affects many cheaper DVD players, who all use the same software codec.

Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player. It handles not only your DVD-Videos (both NTSC- and PAL-formatted discs, depending on your TV), but it plays your music, too--everything from standard CDs to home-burned CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3-encoded CDs. Further, you can load a disc brimming with digital photos for custom slide shows in the comfort of your home theater. An onscreen display simplifies setup and operation, and the unit comes with a compact, full-function remote control. Other features include parental controls (with PIN lock), frame-by-frame slow motion, picture zoom (2x, 4x), and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs).Like to travel? The DVD-224 won't hog space in your bag, and an auto-switching universal power supply handles inputs from AC 110 to 220 volts (50/60 Hz) for use in most countries. Accordingly, the unit's onscreen display offers a choice of 5 setup languages: English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian.A composite-video output ensures compatibility with nearly any television and many newer computer monitors. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (choose from either optical or coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A set of standard left/right RCA analog outputs simplifies hookup with traditional integrated amplifiers and most televisions. What's in the Box DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.
