Sony D-NE326CK MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman Car Kit Review

Sony D-NE326CK MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman Car Kit

This is brilliant. When CDs were a pretty new thing twenty years ago I remember buying a Sony Walkman that cost me well over $200 and played two CDs on 4 AA batteries. Now look what you are getting--a machine that costs a fraction of the price, plays for something like 40 hours on one battery (and rechargeables are now cheap too) and, here is the killer, using the software that comes with this kit, you can save as much as thirty hours of sound on a single CD with Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 Plus compression technology. Alternatively you can convert sound files to MP3, which this player will also play and get about 12 hours of reasonably quality sound.
If this sound useful to you, then I don't think you can go wrong with this kit at this price.
What I have been using it for is recording talking books and 10-part dramatizations of lengthy novels from BBC webcasts using a software recording program.
So I now have the whole of Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd, Dickens's Our Mutual Friend, and Agatha Christie's Nemesis all on one CD which I listen to on long journeys in my car. This saves messing around with several CDs sliding all over the care and falling behind the seats.
Seems to me that there is loads of potential for all kinds of other things. For example you could save 100 music CDs to 4 CDs to use in your car. Very neat and convenient.
Of course the question will arise as to whether the quality of the sound is good enough in this compressed format. For me it is, and the jazz tracks I have also recorded sound fine for use in the car. Obviously if you are a professional sound engineer, or perhaps a professional musician, you may have gripes about it, but for the rest of us, it is probably fine.
The remote control is not much good and the control buttons are a bit small for full size fingers, but you can get used to it. Getting the battery out to replace and/or recharge it is a bit fiddly, especially if you have big fingers.
With the connection to the car's tape player, the corded remote, and the corded power supply, you will have a bit of a tangle of wires in the car, but with this kind of battery life, you can dispense with the power supply easily enough, and the remote too, so then you only have one cable and the player can sit on the passenger seat. With a bit of practice you can turn it on and off and skip tracks without looking.
So if you have an older car with a CD player that doesn't play MP3 CDs, and you want to get rid of a clutter of CDs in your car, or if you want to put a bunch of audio books, or maybe a language learning course, on a single CD, this could be an excellent purchase. I don't regret it.
The question will obviously arise: Why not use an iPod type device instead? You can certainly do that, but not for anything like the same price. And for me, loading up a CD and then setting it aside when I have finished using it, is very simple and requires little time or effort.

Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth LCD Display Car Kit Review

Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth LCD Display Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I played with one of these at Best Buy and thought the display was hard to read and the knob and buttons felt cheap. When I ordered my unit I got the newer all BLACK version display panel and these things have been improved. I chose the 3100 model because I realized I don't have a lot of space on my cars dash to put a lot of displays.
I ordered mine with not just a custom wiring harness for my 1998 Accord EX, but with a custom wiring harness which includes prewired mute configuration (quickconnectproducts dot com). I was dreading having to run the wiring for power until I realized I didn't have too!! The power is also automatically taken via the wiring harness from the power going to the radio. I installed it myself in about 1 hour.
The Parrot has some thoughtful ergonomic design. Very functional. For example, when you turn your key ignition off while on a call, instead of going dead and dropping the call, it continues to to stay on and asks you if you would like to transfer the audio back to the phone! How cool is that.
Audio quality is great. First, unlike my 2008 RAV4 factory bluetooth which is very good, the Parrot is FULL DUPLEX which means both of you can talk at the same time which allows much smoother conversations. It has the magic DSP background noise elimination so callers don't hear the road noise. All the echo is cancelled as well, and your voice is processed to remain strong and loud despite being distant from the microphone. Callers tell me I sound like I am directly talking on the phone and not on a speaker phone. The Parrot audio amp which sends sound to the car speakers does have a small amount of high frequency hiss/noise in the background; however this isn't a problem as you can only hear it when the engine is shut off.
Even though the Parrot doesn't have an interface for your steering wheel controls (I don't have them anyway), you can still operate some of the key functions via voice recognition. Because the Parrot voice recognition limits you to half a dozen voice commands, they actually work!
The 2-3 line display of the Parrot CK3100 is plenty of display for me. Some users may not even need a model with a display. The display indicates phone battery charge and cellular signal strength, although on my Palm Treo 700p with Verizon the cell signal strength is not accurate as displayed on the CK3100 display.
Mounting the display and microphone for these types of devices in a car is always a challenge. However, the Parrot kit includes several different mounts for both the display and microphone. Some quite unique and helpful. The best assortment of actually useful mounting hardware I have seen.
When talking on my cell phone while driving, I am aware that my attention is diverted. I don't like it. So for some time now I have used a Plantronics headset (great product). That improved the situation some but then I tried talking via bluetooth speakerphone in our 2008 RAV4. Talking on speakerphone is VERY different. It is much safer in my opinion. It is just like talking to the person sitting next to you in the car. I would encourage everyone who wants to be a safer less distracted driver while on the cell to get a GOOD QUALITY FULL DUPLEX speakerphone for their car. The Parrot 3100 fits the bill.

This player is durable and low maintenance. requires 1 AAA battery that seems to last forever, and i've had mine now for over 3 years. It's getting hard to find mp3s that accept regular batteries (most have built in rechargeable batteries that are hard to find when bad)., i bought 2 more of these for future.

Sonos BU130 Digital Music System Bundle Review

Sonos BU130 Digital Music System Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the absolute best digital jukebox out there, period. As an added bonus, it's flexible, scalable, multizone, wireless... and systems costing twenty times as much do not even come close the ease of use: Sonos currently has the highest Wife Acceptance Factor of any techno-gadget out there, only equaled by TiVo.
Although some amount of technical savvy is required for the initial setup, anybody can pick up the beautiful remote and immediately figure out how to use it (it's a bit like an iPod).
This bundle contains the wireless controller and its charger (but no charging cradle, more on this later), a ZP80 and a ZP100. The main difference between the two zone players is the ZP100 has a built-in amplifier so you can hook up speakers directly to it, whereas the ZP80 doesn't but it offers digital output (coax and optical) which the ZP100 lacks. Both zone players feature an analog input (you could use it for a TV or a satellite radio receiver, for instance) as well as analog line output. It's the perfect starter kit for a two-zone system; you can always add more controllers and zone players later as needed, and seamlessly integrate them into your system.
Sonos has been relentlessly adding features since its initial release: Rhapsody, Pandora, Napster, Sirius Satellite Radio (no antenna needed, you get the feed over the internet). Reliability has been exemplary.
The price may seem a little steep for a music system, but the nearest competitor (Logitech Squeezebox Duet Network Music System) is nowhere near as fully featured (no amplifier, no audio input, no Sirius) and doesn't cost much less for a two zone system. It also seems to be a lot more complicated to setup and use, but I must admit not having any first-hand experience with it.
The only blemish on the Sonos is that they sell the charging cradle separately for a ridiculous amount of money (it's just a dumb piece of plastic) when it's an indispensable part of the system. Considering the fairly high price of the system, I fail to see the rationale behind excluding it from the bundle... It must be the brainchild of some marketing moron. Other than this minor but irritating point... This is just the most enjoyable, reliable, easiest to use system out there.
This NAS box is a perfect complement to your Sonos system and will host the music files so you can turn off your computer and keep the music going: D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure
The infamous cradle (don't forget to order it): Sonos CC100 Charging Cradle for Sonos CR100 Controller
Edit: the Logitech Squeezebox Duet now supports Sirius.
[Edit August 2008] Sonos released new ZonePlayers, ZP90 and ZP120, part of the new BU150 bundle which replaces the BU130. Don't buy the now obsolete BU130 bundle unless you can get it at a significant discount over the BU150.

Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus Digital/Analog TV Receiver and Video Converter Review

Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus Digital/Analog TV Receiver and Video Converter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The EyeTV 250 Plus is an external USB based tuner that supports NTSC (Analog Cable and Satellite), ATSC (Digital Satellite) and QAM (Digital Cable). (Not all the models available for sale on Amazon are the newer one that added QAM support, so be careful This one definitely has the QAM support). It also has an adapter that can accept Composite and S-Video inputs along with analog stereo audio. For my purposes I was most interested in the QAM capability since I am a cable subscriber. The biggest difference between the cheaper EyeTV Hybrid and the EyeTV 250 Plus is that the 250 has an external MPEG-2 (Video)/MPEG-1 (Audio) encoder (The Hybrid model relies on your CPU to convert the signal into digital format). The advantage here is that when you're recording or viewing something off of either analog TV or the analog inputs all the encoding happens outside of your computer, so all the computer has to do is decode and display the video. This takes a lot of load off your CPU so it becomes much easier to multi-task.
The tuner itself is great. The biggest plus (in my case) is the ability to pick up Clear QAM digital HD channels. This confines you to only the broadcast channels (ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, and PBS in my case). It does take quite a bit of CPU power to handle HD broadcasts however.
More important than the tuner is the included EyeTV 3 Software, which controls the tuner. EyeTV 3 is pretty slick. It includes a TitanTV subscription so you can access TV listings and even remotely schedule a recording to your Mac. The program also allows you set up favorite channels. It also keeps the list of all the channels you have access to, which is my case is 461. Keep in mind - that's an analog and digital version of every basic channel, plus the five HD channels I can see plus all the other HD channels that I can detect but can't watch (it just says encrypted). The only other channels that show up are any non-encrypted digital channels such as the local school districts TV stations and On-demand channels.
What I like best about EyeTV 3 (and I'm using 3.0.2) is that it offers a plethora of deinterlacing options. My number one annoyance is interlaced content. The beauty of EyeTV is that it does a great job deinterlacing content, which makes SD material look a whole lot better and removes some of the annoying jaggies in HD material. While it has the standard motion-adaptive and always settings for deinterlacing, it also offers a progressive scan setting which doubles the frame rate from 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second. The results is especially noticeable when watching SD material. I have to watch Versus via the s-video inputs on the EyeTV and I can hardly believe the huge difference that the progressive scan setting makes for watching hockey. It doesn't make it look anywhere close to HD - but it makes it look a whole lot better. It's a bigger strain to use the progressive scan setting on HD content and it makes even more Core 2 Duo powered mini sweat (although I think this may have more to do with the poor on-board graphics) but with HD I don't find progressive scan to be as big of a plus.
The other great thing about EyeTV is that it functions as a super-DVR. You can set up series recordings just like you can with a normal DVR and EyeTV records the program and saves it to your hard drive. You can then use the built-in editor to remove commercials, etc. While the editor isn't iMovie, it's pretty good and the preview panes down on the bottom can help you find the commercials quickly. What makes EyeTV superior to a regular DVR is that you can keep your recordings around as long as you have disk space and you can edit them. You can automatically have recordings exported to other formats - even directly for your iPod or Apple TV. Many people have asked about a recording feature for the Apple TV, and the EyeTV is the closest thing to it. You can set up a recording, and then tell it to export to Apple TV and add to iTunes. Once the show is finished it'll do the exporting and it'll be available on the Apple TV.
So what isn't it good at? Well, I find the exporting feature the most frustrating. It captures everything in MPEG-2 video and either AC3 Audio or MPEG-1 Audio. My frustration is that the exporting feature is extremely slow. When I do a recording sometimes I'll get about 3 seconds of data on the beginning of the recording that I don't want there. Editing it out is easy enough, but then EyeTV insists on compacting the whole recording again. Also, even though EyeTV can capture and play AC3 (Dolby Digital) tracks, it can't output them to QuickTime files. It's AppleTV setting also lacks support for 24 frames per second so everything (even if its HD) is dropped to 960*540 if it has a frame rate of 30 fps. (The good news is that the solution to this program is free! - HandBrake) I also find the lack of dual tuners annoying. Although EyeTV 3 has a Picture-In-Picture function it can't be used unless you have two devices because the EyeTV 250 Plus is a single tuner only. This also means that if you're recording a program you also have to watch whatever you're recording. So if there are two programs on at the same time that you want to record you're out of luck. My final complaint is a pipe dream, but it would be really nice if the EyeTV 250 could accept component and digital inputs for the recording of HD material with digital audio.
All in all I am extremely satisfied with the EyeTV 250 Plus, despite the few shortcomings. It provides a great TV-on-you-Mac solution at a relatively low cost.

Sanyo Easy Street NVM-4070 Bluetooth 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Sanyo Easy Street NVM-4070 Bluetooth 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sanyo NVM-4070 "Easy Street" Portable Navigation System, Piano Black
We have had this item now for almost a month. It is feature rich, and the features really work. The special features of note are:
- blue tooth
- fm transmitter
- plays mp3, wav, wma files (but not wma with DRM security)
- real time traffic updates with automatic or manual re-routing
It is very fast, re-routes quickly without announcing, "off route." You can generate route alternates by clicking three buttons from the map view for an alternate route. Address selection is easy. Creating Via's is easy.
You can switch between functions relatively easily - there is a menu button. From there you can open other functions each with a soft menu button on the screen. Yes, you can control the music while you navigate, and it will lower the volume to give you directions. It will not give audio directions if you are in a phone call but the onscreen navigation will continue. Some features are mutually exclusive, but you can navigate and call, or navigate and listen to music easily. It does not include access to the book services, and my library offers free book downloads with DRM - the unit does not support DRM security.
Car FM transmitters are touchy, but the FM transmitter works fairly well. If you are not familiar, the idea is that the GPS transmits to you car radio so that you can hear the music, navigation, and phone through your car radio. In my Prius, it works best when mounted directly over the radio. It easily allows you to select the frequency to use, but it some frequencies work much better than others.
The Blue tooth imported my phone book - it does not do voice dialing, but has lists of recent numbers called. Once uploaded, the phone book (contacts) is easy to navigate. The blue tooth recognizes the phone, and automatically links - unless your phone is already actively linked with another device - you must then intercede to disconnect one and reconnect the other. The blue tooth set up was a bit touchy to start, but once set up it worked well. It can store configurations for several phones, and will identify on the screen which connection is active. (it can connect to only one phone at a time but if you have more than one phone, it will store the setup for each).
We just started using the Navteq realtime direction service. You can see the routes covered at http://www.navteq.com/rdstraffic/index.html
I have not yet determined the threshold for when it will reroute you - but it does put up a message that the route is being changed because of traffic conditions, and you can view the traffic alerts. It comes with a 90 day free trial and I have not yet determined the actual cost.
It is head and shoulders above the Garmin iQue 3600 we have used till now, but there are a few things the much older Garmin did better.
The Garmin POI's are more expansive, but the Sanyo shows rest areas. I miss the ability to view POI's along my route - a selection option in the Garmin. But the Sanyo with Blue tooth, does something really nice - while viewing the POI - you can touch a button to call the POI. (I suspect that the issues reported here are common to all newer GPS units).
The Garmin had a very nice interactive - real time - turn by turn display - the Sanyo shows the waypoints, but it is less clear.
I found that it is easier to use if I use a pencil eraser to navigate the screen.
It is easy to move the map display by touching the edge of the screen to change the center of the map. It is a bit touchy about zooming out and in.
The mounting kit attaches to the windshield easily and comes down easily. (Garmin used a bean bag to anchor on the dash - I had liked that a lot.)

Premium Car Mount / Charger / FM Transmitter for all Generations of AT&T and Verizon Apple iPhone and iPod Review

Premium Car Mount / Charger / FM Transmitter for all Generations of ATandT and Verizon Apple iPhone and iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hi all,
This is the first report I am ever writing, so don't be too strict with me!
I purchased this Car Mount / FM Transmitter about a week ago and have it in use for only two days now. You take the car mount out of the box, plug it into your cigarette lighter, and it works. It holds my iPhone 3GS nicely. I have a case on (Incipio Feather Case) and I do not need to take it off, it fits perfectly as you can adjust the width of the holder as well as the back part of it (little turning knob on the back for adjustment). I would think that other iPods and earlier iPhones would also fit without problems.
The car mount comes with an audio cable which you attach to the bottom part of the holder and plug it into your iPhone so you can make calls and hear the voice over your car radio. Haven't used it much but it works quite well. The audio quality is very good, only very little background noise and in my opinion superior to what I had used before (little wireless iGrip FM adapter). I am actually impressed by the sound quality the transmitter delivers. It comes with a little on/off button that is very convenient. You can turn the device on and off and decide when you iPhone should be charged or not. When in off mode it will of course not play music through the transmitter. You have four preset buttons where you can save a frequency for quick access. The search feature is also pretty cool as you are able to find a free station within seconds. Just press two buttons at the side for about 3 seconds and the transmitter selects a station where it can send on without interference. You can easily use the car mount in both vertical and horizontal mode. This comes in handy if you want to use your iPhone for GPS navigation.
The downside of this product is that it will not fit every car I guess. I am driving a Ford Taurus 2005, and the DC outlet is inconveniently positioned, which means when I plug it in and try to adjust the whole thing, the part that goes into the outlet is too short and does not let you adjust well. the plastic parts in the middle of my car are in the way so I have to turn the whole holder slightly to the side to get it in a stable and well visible position. But this will vary from car to car and is not necessarily a negative aspect of the product.
However, when I first plugged it in, it was very hard to remove it again. I actually slightly damaged the plastic and rubber parts of the charger because I had to literally rip it out of the DC outlet. In my opinion this is because a) I have a very tight cigarette lighter (at least I think) and b) there are small rubber/gummi part on the side of the thing that goes into the outlet. The rubber parts fitted the charger so tightly that it was very hard to take it out again. When I ripped it out the rubber wore off and is now slightly damaged. I am not sure if this was my fault, but I didn't expect it to be that hard to take the charger out again. I tried it in another car after that and there it fit just well, it wasn't a problem to take it out again.
Anyway, all in all I give four stars for this product, mainly because the sound quality is amazing and it pretty much does what it is supposed to do: it holds and charges your iPhone and also plays your music through the car radio in really good quality. It is rather expensive, but so far worth the money I as I enjoy listening to non-noisy music from my iPhone in my car.
----------------- edit on January 23rd: It's been a while since I purchased this unit, and gave it a rather positive review. Due to the fact that a lot of people have experienced huge problems with this car mount system I feel like editing my first review:
I have the item in use now for about 2 months, and I would still rate this prodcut 4 stars out of five. I understand that iPhones would not work with any case (I guess the thiker the worse...), however, it does with mine. I have a very thin case called iFeather, made by Incipio (for 3GS). My unit (crossing my fingers) still works flawlessly, has not fallen into pieces, although I pulled it out and plugged it back in (different cars) many times, and does not shut off randomly. The hands free feature works well also.
I feel sorry for all those who made bad experiences with this prodcut, but wanted to tell you that there are positive stories. Honestly, given the rather high price of the unit, I would hope that it would work without problems in more cases for more people. This surely seems to be a downside of the FlexPod X2!

Dual XDVD8183N DVD Receiver with 7-Inch Touch Screen LCD, Built-In Bluetooth, and iPod Control(iPod Cable NOT included) Review

Average Reviews:

Got this item last month and it rocks, can't beat value & reliability for price. I do have a few little gripes.
Good:
This is a decent head unit with very good interface, screen clarity and DVD playback. Sound quality was very good considering I have no amp and I liked that sound options could be configured. I read reviews on other sites before buying and as advertised most of the functions worked. I was able to play DVDs, MP3 CDs, and regular CDs. The bluetooth worked ok for audio transfer (with Nokia 6230 & Blackberry Pearl), and handsfree mic sounded ok on receiving end. I like the piano black with brushed chrome look and feel. I did not install the backup camera, and did not get the tv tuner unit in time for the install, but the aux-in port works fine.
Gripes:
I haven't gotten the ipod interface to work yet though - i currently have an Ipod nano (3rd gen). The Dual logo displays on the ipod, but the head unit keeps saying "connecting..." I think it may be a compatibility issue with the nano firmware version. Will check this out, but I can use the 3.5mm in jack as an alternative, and the nano does get charged using the ipod jack connection. I had to use a by-pass for the parkbrake - had a little trouble at first, but resolved this. Would have liked this unit to come with Divx and have more functionallity with the bluetooth - does not read call address book on blackberry pearl correctly. Tends to get warm quickly.
Overall:
This unit was professionally installed in a '04 "Corolla". Installation was quick and almost pain free (by-pass to parking brake took some time - I do not live in a state with video restrictions). I would recommend this unit to any one. Its a good sturdy unit with lots of features, and I could not find another unit at lower price vs reliability concerns.

This is one heck of a cd player rugged too. My old player died and with so many choices this had great reviews and ratings I bought it. Plays great and have used it probably daily and didnt need to change the batteries for a month on the second level my only complaints are the aweful headphones(buy new ones)that are very flimsy and where the shock switch is(right under the cd inside the flap)where you need to open it and remove the cd to change it. On my previous one i had broken off the lid within a week NOT going to happen on this one i've dropped numerous times and it keeps coming back un-harmed. The hand strap is great for running ang biking but is a pain while around the house use. Awesome machine!

The snazzy DSJ301 CD Walkman boasts Sony's exciting S2 Sports design, ergonomic joystick operation, and great sound. Ultimate Skip-Free G-Protection technology and a three-way control key on the grip together permit use while jogging or participating in other activities, while a supplied hand strap makes it easier to carry. Though it's not designed for immersion, the Walkman does offer a water-resistant design with rubber gaskets, bushings, and water-resistant seals that help keep out water, moisture, and dirt.
Sony's Ultimate Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks--up to 10 times faster than conventional systems. The player delivers 50 hours of playback on two AA batteries (not included) bolstered by Sony's two-position automatic volume limiter system (AVLS), which conserves batteries and guards your hearing by capping your listening level. This player supports optional Sony Nickel Cadmium NC-WMAA rechargeable batteries or optional Nickel Metal Hydride NH-WM2AA rechargeable batteries, offering great savings and convenience over replaceable batteries. Other features include nine playback modes (among them shuffle play, repeat play, and 64-track program play) and audio CD-R/CD-RW playback.

Altec Lansing US BackBeat Plus Earphones Review

Altec Lansing US BackBeat Plus Earphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I initially bought these headphones for around $40 and was pleased. We did a lot of things and went a lot of places together. They helped me be more productive by blocking out the annoying banter of my co-workers, they allowed me to watch annoying YouTube videos on my iPhone without alerting to my roommates via noise bleed. When we weren't hanging out together, I knew that they were residing comfortable and tangle-free in my pocket; ready at a moment's notice.
Things were going great until one day I open the dryer door and see them dangling there, twisted and caught between the door and the Rotator Falange. Not only had I washed these loyal headphones, but I had thrown them in the merciless drier. I jimmied them out of the drier and couldn't bare to see them all tangled and knotted up. I didn't even attempt to check if they worked - it was obvious. I quickly moved on and bought a new pair of headphones, but I couldn't bare to throw my old friends away, so I put them in my desk drawer hoping that some day I will learn headphone CPR.
A few days into my new headphones and they just weren't the same. I heard my co-worker's voices for the first time in a while and I didn't like it. At the end of my rope, I decided to give my old friends a try - and they effing worked! All this time they were trying to tell me they wanted to be friends again, but I just ignored them.
Life was good for another 6 months until tonight I opened my drier door to a familiar, but no less horrible, site. This time they were twisted and knotted even worse. I quickly untangled them expecting the nothing good. These headphones were troopers through one load of laundry, but not two! No headphones could be that tough. Surely they had given up on me.
To my astonishment, they are still working. I am reunited again and it does certainly feel oh so good. If you buy these headphones, you're not only buying something to nestle your ears with hours of your favorite teen-pop playlist. You're investing in your own quality of life. These headphones might not be the flashiest thing out there, you might not look like one of the non-douchey blutooth guys when you wear them, or even feel like those cool kids with the white earbuds in. No, these headphones aren't in it for the flashy stuff, they're in it for YOU. They won't tattle to the nearest person of the Miley you're pumping through them, they will love you for you and not for the crappy music you listen to.
Which is great news for you Bowling for Soup fans!

ibiza Rhapsody H1B008AQ 8 GB Wi-Fi/MP3 Player by Haier (Aqua) Review

ibiza Rhapsody H1B008AQ 8 GB Wi-Fi/MP3 Player by Haier (Aqua)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know, you are thinking: How can there be such a disparity of opinions (?) - Some say this was their worse purchase... ever; others love it. For my own part (my own opinion), when you read other comments/reviews - including mine - (1) you should look at the date of the comment, and (2) know the needs or intent of the reviewer.
First, it's obvious Haier had some real issues at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. Any critical comment made in that time period needs to be carefully scrutinized. There have been 'fixes'. I personally ignore any review that is a year old.
Second, if you are not already a Rhapsody fan, You need to think seriously about purchasing a Rbiza Rhapsody - and spending the premium for the Rhaposdy features. Note the word Rhapsody in the name? If you are not a Rhapsody fan or have not heard about it, you owe it to yourself to at least know what you are missing. In my mind, there is iTunes and Rhapsody. There is no contest if you are a PC guy - Rhapsody is a better service (thus my need and intent).
So, yes, I am a Rhapsody fan. Not a power user by any means - I have a job and children, so I don't sit around with ear buds in my head all day. How anyone can conceivibly put 1000+ songs on anything is beyond me (much less 5000+?). If you need or want to load that many - on any device - don't be an idiot and try to do it wirelessly; connect the thing to your computer and drag them... then go to bed. (Is there some status associated with having the most songs on your MP3? Something I don't know about?).
Two features made me spend the money for the 8G version. The obvious one is the wireless link to Rhapsody. The second is the podcast feature. When I workout in the gym (which has WIFI), I hope to listen to my fav podcast while running. Too often I forget to pull them off the desktop and drag them to my old MP3; half the time I don't have the receiver running, so I don't even have the latest versions on the PC.
And, in the event you want to see the device in action before you buy, there are help videos on the Haier site. These are not produced by Steven Speilburg; they are short, to the point and show exactly what the unit does without any marketing noise. I don't know what that says, or if you like that (I do), but, if nothing else, they are 'helpful'. There is also a 74 page user manual that is in PDF format you can download, view, print. The manual does NOT come with the unit. I like that too.
So, down to the brass-tax.
The device seems solid to hold. It's metal and not heavey but substancial. There's obviously a lot of 'stuff' packed into the little box - which maybe bigger than most, but I like that - being over 50 years old, my eyes prefer this size as opposed to something you might loose in your pocket.
Navigation is straight forward. The touchpad is also a clicker. Not being one to read directions, I started out tapping the touchpad to select an item and it wouldn't select. After a few minutes, I figured out you have to Press on the touch pad to select. (duh). Note the help video called short cuts. Like I said before, very helpful.
The manual switches on the outside of the box work. You can turn it on/off; adjust the volume and there's a lock switch to keep accidental fumblings from doing anything unintentional. Nuf Said.
WIRELESS CONNECTION
So, back to the real reason for the purchase. I have a Linksys Router (provided by a cell phone provider - My Land Line goes through the internet). Attached - either directly or wireless - are 5 computers, an eBook reader and a PlayStation 3. I say this because (1) there's a lot of potential traffic going out of my house on the broadband, and (2) something, I'm not sure what, can knock my desktop computer off the network: Probably my wireless phone or cell phone. Or neighbor's? Whatever it is, I'll come home from work and the PC will be off line (a Repair doesn't always work). Your network maybe more reliable and traffic free. Point is, the world is still not a perfect place.
Also, to be considered is the amount of traffic Rhapsody has to deal with. You would think that it's most busy in the evening; not so much in the morning... My experience with the Rhapsody connection has been very good - considering.
For example, I have been listening to a Rhapsody channel since 8:30 this morning and currently it is 10:42 AM. I've not had one hic-up. The battery was fully charged and still has a lot of juice left (if you can believe the little icon). Granted, this time of day, there is no traffic on my home network and presumably the traffic to the Rhapsody site is minimal.
I have a two story house - with 9 foot ceilings and a basement. The router is on the top floor. I can walk anywhere in the house and not lose the connection. When I'm in the basement, I still have 3 Bars (of of 4).
During what I would call high volume times (evening), the stream does skip at times. In the hour of being connect last night, it dropped the signal (or whatever) about 5 times. It reconnects after a short time (less than a minute) and picks up with the next song. So, if you are in the middle of a song you like (streaming to a channel) and it drops the signal, you won't be listening to that song when it comes back. Course, my 16 year old daughter was on her laptop, and my wife was on her laptop, and it was evening, so something just wasn't able to keep up entirely - either my internet connection or Rhapsody - or one of all those components between me and Rhapsody. Still not perfect.
I got the 8G version because (1) I don't watch video on this thing - remember my eye issue, (2) I won't load 5000+ songs on it - remember the status issue and (3) the 30G device has moving parts (a disk drive). I don't like moving parts. They use up more energy (shorter battery life) and there's more that can go wrong. I don't go with the lesser (4G) of anything. That's just who I am. The 8G is JUUUUUSSSSST RIGHT (said Goldielocks).
And, I did not even open the package of ear buds that came with it. I use what I have. If you don't like the ones that come with it, break down and go buy a new pair. You just spend 200+ USD on a box that essentially just plays music, you can go spend a few extra bucks on good buds.
I've not messed with the BlueTooth feature and I'm not sure I ever will. Maybe one day when I get tried of dealing with wires coming out of my ears, and there are BlueTooth earbuds (?), maybe then I'll crack that shell.
One last consideration. I don't know how technically savey you are, but in my case I was already a Rhapody To Go member. I was carefull to do things in a specific order when I first got the device. First, I charged it up - it comes with a wall charger - which I also like.
Then - the order is very important - I got online with Rhapsody on the Desktop. I GOT ONLINE. Then, with the unit off, I hooked up the Ibiza. Then I turned it on.
The desktop Rhapsody software recognized it - listed it in the window pane on the left. I right clicked on the player icon and selected the menu item to Authorize the Player. It did.
I they clicked the button to disconnect the unit; it said I could and I then disconnected the player.
I then, on the device, selected the Settings menu and then Wireless. I setup the device to connect to my home network - which, by the way, you only need do once. Once connected, it checked for updates - which it found. I let the updates download. It then said for the updates to be applied, I had to connect the unit to the wall power outlet - which I did - and it then loaded the update and rebooted itself. (Sometimes, you just don't ask why; you Just Do It).
I then connected to Rhapsody. It did NOT ask me for my User ID. I thought that was a bit strange, but then I recalled I did 'authorize' the device on the PC - it was then that it figured out who I was. It did ask for a Password, which I gave it and it connected without any problems.
I've only connected to Rhapsody from home (so far), but in each case I was NOT asked for the Rhapsody password again... it just connects.
It's now 11:24 AM - almost 3 hours of non-stop, uninterrupted channel listening - wirelessly. The battery indicator now says it's half used up... so, I figure 6 hours of wireless connection. It would last longer if I wasn't connected to Rhapsody real time...
But then, I don't walk around with earbuds stuck in my ears...
Or do I?
Scott

I was looking for an alternate to using headphones to listen to my music. This little speaker is a great desktop solution. Of course the sound quality doesn't match my home stereo system but considering the size and the use I'm happy. I think this unit will be great for our family vacation too. I have a DMX Solo, I found them when I googled for a music server to run for my Super Bowl party. I knew people would want music before the game while munching and no one can ever decide on a movie. So when everyone got here Sunday, they all just started picking their favorite music and adding it to this playlist on the server, there was never a hick up, and it ran flawlessly. The thing I loved so much was that anyone on the internet could add to it, so it didn't interrupt when my "not so brilliant" friend kicked my computer and stepped on my power strip and powered down my imac. The server was in the living room and kept going, which is something I wasn't used to with my old Sonos system. Thanks Team ACX, I appreciate it.

December, 2008 There are a lot of features in this box and they all work well.
I have had this radio for about a day, and played with most of its features while wiring it up into the dashboard of a motorhome. This is simply the most bang for the buck available with all of the features that were desired... Navigation, Rear View Monitor, CD/DVD/VCD, AM/FM, Bluetooth and external Video input from another device.
The Radio interface is very basic. The radio is simply an AM/FM radio with no display of the INFO or data that is broadcast - and it is not an HD radio. But it has excellent quality audio played through the speakers on both the AM and FM bands. The display simply displays the 6 frequencies that have been programmed for that particular band.
The Bluetooth interface works well. If you play music on a streaming device, it will play through the radio's speakers. And you can make and receive calls through your Bluetooth phone.
GPS system works very well, as I had just plugged in the antenna, and as soon as I brought up the GPS, it showed exactly where I was on the map. I have not used it for navigation yet, but there are other reviews online that indicate the navigation software is adequate.
There are external jacks for displaying the DVD video and other screens on an external monitor and separate 4 channel audio outputs as well. The video and front R/L audio drive a larger monitor elsewhere in the RV.
The reverse video input works well. All you need to do it hook one of the wires in the supplied wiring harness up to the reverse light wire on your vehicle, and whenever you put your vehicle into reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear video input, while continuing to play whatever audio source you were playing. If you have purchased and wired a reverse video camera on the back of your vehicle, you can always see what is behind you.
When playing DVDs, it is easy to step though the various sound tracks and other DVD features.
The secondary SD slot works with only older style SD cards with capacities up to 4GB. MP3s and videos can be on the SD cards or burned onto CDs or DVDs and played on this system.
It would be nice if there were some technical user type interface into the operating system of this box, but no information can be easily found on the internet. I would anticipate very little product support if you get into trouble with this box. It is better for the do-it-yourself types who want a lot of features and can support themselves. If you are that type, then you can save over $400 with this versus a comparable product with a name brand. There are some very similar products listed on EBay, directly from China. The screen shots are very similar to the XOVision with minute differences in each screen, but the button placement, SD card slots and the way the video screen folds down are all similar.

We bought 3 of these because my husband wanted a small set of speakers to use at work and electronics don't last long at his work site. I was so impressed that I now keep one set at the house and one in my backpack. At first I was skeptical- these things are tiny, but we have been using them for weeks and for such a small footprint the sound is great. The set I use at the house hasn't been charged since the day we received them and is still going strong even though I use them every morning for 30-45 minutes with my iPhone. My husband works at a drilling rig and is very happy with how he can now hear video off his laptop in his trailer over the noise of the rig.
