As were many others, I was reluctant to purchase an MP3 player from a company that normally manufactures microwave ovens, dehumidifiers, and other home appliances. I watched reviews and comments about the ibiza for a month before jumping in. I've owned several hard drive MP3 players in the last year, culminating in an Archos 504 WiFi that was working pretty well for me until Urge and Rhapsody merged, and I lost a compatible subscription based music service.
The Haier Ibiza is the first player I've owned that hits every major requirement I have. Subscription based music with a broad, deep catalog, unprotected music, unrestricted WiFi, bluetooth, a reasonable, quick, well designed UI, etc.
Additionally, the development team at VariaMobile, the folks who are developing the software for this device have taken a very open, community driven approach to making this device better.
Downside? There are no accessories yet, (specifically a docking station). The player cannot be used while connected USB to your computer, (my previous Archos models would prompt, asking if it should connect, or simply charge).
Haier and Varia have put together a potent combination of features that more than justify the price, (some have complained it is too expensive). Anyone looking for a player that does music, subscriptions, and pod-casts will not be disappointed. I haven't even dug into the video features yet.

Belkin Bluetooth In-Car Adapter Review

Belkin Bluetooth In-Car Adapter

I'm fairly disappointed. Functionally, it worked great. But the signal through the jack was weak. I could turn the volume on the factory stereo way up and it would not get even close to the levels I prefer. Bass levels were severely lacking as well. It may be a problem with the BT protocol (A2DP?), but any engineer worth a salt would compensate for it and amplify the signal to a more reasonable level. I bought it with the intent to stream music. I can't speak to the call functionality because I take few calls when driving did not keep it on long enough to receive any calls.

iriver iGP-100 1.5 GB MP3 Player Review

iriver iGP-100 1.5 GB MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Archos 20GB died after more than two years and being dropped one too many times... So, after too many moments of silence, I started looking for a replacement that was sturdier --> and less than $200. Fortunately, iRiver ended this nightmare quest for me. After buying and returning nine different alleged mp3 devices this weekend, I'm keeping this one.
The iGP-100 is in the same price range as much smaller Flash players (including iRiver's own Flash products, which seems odd). It's got everything I want, except expandability, but at a gig-and-a-half I ain't complainin'... and it's less than 1/4 of the weight of that darn Archos brick.
The iGP-100 doesn't come with any extras besides the charger and some earbuds I'll never use. A sports arm-band would have been nice, though! Lifting weights with it is going to be awkward until I find one that fits.
Windows XP treats the iGP-100 like a removable drive and no funky software is required to drop WMA files on it and start jammin'. In fact, it doesn't seem to come with any software besides drivers for obsolete operating systems, which is cool and probably kept the price down. Windows Media Player 9.0 does everything else a guy (or gal) could need with regards to music management. We hates Music Match, yesss, we do, so not seeing it was bliss.
Within 120 seconds of opening the package, I had copied eight (8) CDs worth of 64kpbs WMA (three CDs of Creed, four CDs of Nickelback, and the entire soundtracks from XXX, Scorpion King and Daredevil) onto it and was rockin' with 1.1GB still free on the player. The USB 2.0 is very cool after suffering with every other slow USB 1.1 player I bought and returned this weekend...
The quasi-jog-dial navigation could be better, but I'll get used to it. Lot's of wandering into the system menu by accident to start with... The whole "long click" or jog-dial thing isn't something I'm used to. And one could wish for replaceable batteries of a standard type, just in case, but not with this one.
A slightly smaller, squarer form factor would be ideal... the roundness is a little awkward.
Nevertheless, the iGP-100 beat out both of the RCA Lyra players (they have great XP driver support and SD expandability but no way to organize/play music in folders -- I don't want to listen to 500 songs on random repeat, that's as bad as the radio), the iRiver 256MB Flash player (requires funky software and doesn't act like Flash drive), anything by Sonic Blue (I returned both the Rio Chiba and the Rio Cali == junk), the TDK Mojo 256 (in spite of good technical support and customer service, it's junk -- it ate the contents of my favorite SD card full of tunez and spat them out and does *not* act like Flash drive) and anything by Mpio (they seem to use the same junk software and firmware as TDK and their English, well, it isn't).
All in all, I'm tired of standin' in the return line and I've tried all the other < $200 alternatives already, so the iGP-100 is the one I'm keepin'.

i bought one of these just because i was on a budget. first of all dont let the screen fool you it doesnt have a gps option. youll have to buy that. second, it would NOT fit in my 2007 tiburon. it looks good has plenty of features but its not very smart. clear pictures and everything but dont watch anything duriong the day. you wont be able to see it. and the instructions it came with looks like a fourth grader wrote them. i plan on keeping it for awhile or at least till something better comes by. but i wouldnt reccomend buying it unless its a last resort kind of thing.

Chill Pill Mobile Speakers iPod/MP3 Players and Laptops (Black) Review

Chill Pill Mobile Speakers iPod/MP3 Players and Laptops (Black)
Average Reviews:

First things first: Don't expect high fidelity sound out of these tiny speakers - this product is all about convenience. Everything needed to operate the device stays with it, including the audio cables and built in rechargeable battery.
The only exception, and this is a big one, is that the USB charging functionality requires a separate and easy-to-lose mini-usb gender changing cable (included in the box). It's simply not possible to plug the device directly into a computer without some sort of adapter or additional cable. Most computers don't have a mini-usb connector.
That disappointment aside, these are very innovative portable speakers. I hope the manufacturers will find a way to integrate the charging cable into future versions.

I really like the concept of this design. It makes it possible for me to see the ipod while I'm working out. The problem with this armband is that it is kind of itchy on bare skin. Also, the first time I put it on, the stitching came loose on one of the velcro pads. I'd like to say it's because my arms are so awesomely massive that they busted it up, but the truth is the work there is a little shoddy. It's not worth returning because I have used a needle and thread before, but it was a bummer.

Sony D-FJ200 Walkman Portable CD Player with Digital AM / FM / TV / Weather Tuner Review

Sony D-FJ200 Walkman Portable CD Player with Digital AM / FM / TV / Weather Tuner
Average Reviews:

Some of the reviews here sound like they were churned out by David Manning-like frauds. Anyway, this is Sony's best cd walkman in awhile. Their previous premium model, the D-FJ787 was a piece of junk because the tuning and playback controls could only be accessed using an external, wired remote control you had to plug your headphones into to listen - resulting in a MESS of wires. Fortunately Sony moved the controls back onto the player and I must say, they are creatively placed on rings around the center of the lid's face. The only thing I don't like about this player is the digital display: it does not give you an accurate seconds playback (off by a second). A minor complaint but it shouldn't deter you from picking one of these up.

Spin your commercial CDs, your recordable music CDs, or listen to the radio, TV, or weather-band transmissions with Sony's versatile, full-circle D-FJ200. And, at a mere .97 inches thick, this Walkman lives up to its name, traveling with ease in your pocket, purse, or backpack. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and an amazing 48 hours of playback--70 when listening to radio only--from a pair of standard AA batteries (not included).Sony's Skip-Free G-Protection boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-FJ200's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle. The D-FJ200 offers a whopping 51 station presets, which works out to 30 FM, 10 AM, 4 WB, and 7 TV stations so you're never far from your favorite channels. You can hook the player up with your home system through an optional analog stereo "Y" interconnect. Should your music require it, the Walkman's Digital Mega Bass Sound engages digital processing to enhance your music with deep, authentic bass tones.Bookmark playback lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. A handy clip-on remote control lets you operate the player with ease, even when you're on the run. What's in the Box CD player, MDR-027LP stereo headphones, a clip-on remote control, a user's manual, and warranty information.

I couldn't get it to tune an FM station or a web station. The software is not intuitive. I'm don't think the item is defective, as XP recognized it and loaded drivers successfully. I think the software just didn't work.
I uninstalled it and threw the thing in a drawer. It's not heavy enough to be a paperweight. I guess I'll hold on to it a while before I throw it away.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home 2 TB STAM2000100 Review

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home 2 TB STAM2000100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I give this item a 3.5 stars. It looses some stars because it really is not "simple set up" as it states. It takes some time to get it up and your files to back up the first initial time. I was extremely excited to try this product with my home network since we have two Windows PCs (1 XP & 1 Windows 7), and one Mac computer. For each desktop computer, I have installed wired external backup drives. The idea of having ONE back up drive to backup all my files, photos and iTunes music seemed to be like a dream come true. Features a 1TB storage, which is equivalent to 1000GB.
Lets start with the installation. I am using the Windows 7 PC for initial setup. First and most important, you need a Home Network, a wireless router and of course an internet connection. Enclosed in the box is a very basic "Quick Start" guide, I recommend going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the 82 page manual which gives more information. I plugged in power and Ethernet cable to my wireless router. I powered up the drive and inserted the installation CD. I named and registered my drive and added additional user accounts , one for each computer. After that was complete I had to install the software on my other Windows PC and Mac. After I installed the CD on the other PCs, a screen pops up asking to insert the username and password. It's that simple. On my Mac the installation was a little different, but I was able to easily follow the instructions and get it connected using Time Machine with no hassles. One bit of advice for Mac users, if you plan on using Time Machine to back up your files instead of using the optional Memeo Instant Backup, you need to go to Seagate Share Preferences before installing the program on the Mac. Once you are in the preferences page, enable ComputersBackup. Create a password, this password will be used to configure the program when it is installed on your Mac. This information can only be found in the downloaded Users Manual online. Luckily I read the entire manual before attempting to install the Seagate GoFlex. It did take a long, long time to backup all files and folders from all three computers, but I had no bugs or issues. Depending on how many files and folders you are having backed up, it may take all day and night. The program will just run in the background and you do not have to do anything.
The drive will automatically created three folders for each PC account, a public, personal and backup folders. The Seagate Dashboard is the centralized location for all the computer files. This only works with Windows, this is the reason I used my Windows 7 PC as the main system. On the Mac it is Seagate Share and you must use the internet to access the files. You do have the option to use the internet storage base for Windows as well if you like.
There are a few options on how you want to backup your files, I went with the automatic backup. I clicked on instant backups on my menu and the computer shows you the amount of storage that will be included in the backup. If you only what to choose certain files, you can use the advanced settings and drag which files to backup. After clicking "Start Backup", my files started backing up. Whenever I add a new file to the folder or make and changes, the Seagate GoFlex will automatically back up the new file.
Every computer in my home already has a wireless printer, so I really have no use to for the share printer option. But if you do want to use a printer wireless throughout your home network, you must attach the printer via the printer's USB cable to the Seagate GoFlex Drive.
There are many other features and options that can be used, but my primary reason for using this device is to backup the iTunes and photo files on all the computers. When you have thousands of songs and spent several hundreds of dollars on iTunes purchases for every iTunes account on each system, you want to make sure you can access your file in case something terrible happens like the internal hard drive dies. Trust me, I have had this happen to me. I always burn my photos to a CD for added protection, but this way we can share our photos from any computer.
Overall, once you get the unit installed and your files and folders backed up it is extremely easy to use. I guess time will tell if the unit is reliable for retrieving backup files if your system crashes or dies. Hopefully I will not have to find that out! :-)
UPDATE: Sometimes I am not able to gain access to my account online. This is because I use Firefox with a 64-bit operating system and currently "Flash" is not not supported for this OS. I keep getting the "Flash Crash Error Report". However, I can sign in with no troubles using Internet Explorer. So if you have troubles signing into the account online, try a different browser.
If you notice that the drives are not showing under devices in your computer, best thing to do is to unplug it for 15 seconds and then plug it back in to reboot.

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players (Black) Review

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, all FM transmitters cause noise on the receiving end, if you turn volume up enough. And don't expect the sound quality to be better than your FM radio itself. It will be worse. If possible, use a wired option such as a "cassette connector" for car. That said, wireless transmitters do offer convenience, and some are better, while others are worse, depend mostly on unit's output power, range, and station selections. After trying out 4 of them personally, I found station selections to be the most important in getting good quality sound on your radio. Hence, the Belkin TuneCast II is the best out there. As far as I know (in the price range I search), it is the only one on the market that offers full frequency digital tuning (Arkon offers transmitters with full frequency analog tuning - SoundFeeder 150x).
Here is a summary of my review on the four transmitters I tried.
Belkin TuneCast II:
+ full frequency digital tuning with 0.05 stepping
+ 4-station memory
+ dual power (battery and DC)
+ auto on/off
+ good output and range
+ LCD display
+ cord storage on unit
- USB power will be nicer, as I have my own USB2DC adapter
- LCD not lighted
iRock 400FM
+ dual power (battery and DC)
+ good output and range
- only 4 preset stations
- dangling cord
- kind of ugly
Arkon SoundFeeder 250
+ good output and range
+ cord storage on unit
- only 8 preset stations
- battery power only (spec claimes 60hr, but I seriously doubt it as others with similar battery could only last 10-13hr)
SIIG Music Adapter Pro
+ dual power (battery and USB, could be tripple if you have your own USB2DC adapter)
+ ok output and range (volume is kind of low)
+ lighted LCD
+ cord storage on unit
- claimed to have 9 preset stations with autoscan, but it was so hard to operate that I could only verify 5 stations through manual stepping, and autoscan does NOT pick up the best station
- battery compartment very hard to open
- DO NOT BUY THIS, even though it looks good, and has good spec
Here are some personal tips on any FM transmitter setup:
1) If your radio and transmitter allows 0.1 stepping, choose an even frequency station such as 88.40, since very very few stations broadcast on even frequecies.
2) Make sure your MP3 files have loud enough volume, so you don't have to boost your MP3 unit or radio's volume too much. High volume magnifies noise. There are many software out there that fine tunes MP3, including volume.
3) If you have to boost volume, boost MP3 unit's volume instead of radio's. High radio volume causes more noise.
4) Always make sure you have new battery or are using DC adapter. Low power forces you to turn up volume, and it in turn causes noise.
5) In general, songs fair better with these transmitters than solo instruments, as noise could become more obvious on the later.

Monster iCarPlay Wireless 800 FM Transmitter for iPod and iPhone Review

Monster iCarPlay Wireless 800 FM Transmitter for iPod and iPhone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The transmission is terrible, you can barely hear the music over the static. The scanning function doesn't even pick the best of the static stations, when you are lucky it is only .1 or .2 off from a decent station, but about half the time there is no transmission at all. Also the dial, which initially looks fancy and fun, is very awkward to manipulate while driving. So essentially this is a very expensive ipod charger for when you are on the go.

FREESTYLE AUDIO - 2GB WATERPROOF MP3 PLAYER BLUE (32784)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item a week ago thinking that it would make me want to swim laps longer - and it did. The sound quality was great and I even overlooked the confusing interface because - hey - its allowing me to listen to my music while I swim laps.
It worked great for a week - or 4 days of swimming laps, and then I went to turn it on and I got "loading..." and thats as far as the screen would go. Now the screen is blue and orange and there's condensation inside the display. Now - I know what you're thinking "Hey - are you deep sea diving with this thing or swimming laps 50 ft. below the surface of your pool?" No. No I am not. I'm fairly close to the surface while I'm swimming and keep the player in its own zip compartment in my gym bag which is free from water.
So now I'm looking for another mp3 player while I try to get my money back on this piece of crap. I'm sure its great if you're going canoeing and not touching water much, but for lap swimming, it failed me.

I'm just reviewing the FM transmitter ability for an iPod Touch 3rd Gen. It is better than my old monster brand one, but not ideal in terms of sound quality. You can hear static noise if you put it loud and there is no music playing. Not a deal-breaker but I wouldn't recommend an FM transmitter if you have the option of directly plugging in through a audio cable...
On the plus side it holds the iTouch very well and makes it look really snazzy.
Works perfect if you don't put the music too loud.

Scosche TZ4 iPod Bottom Dock Bluetooth Transmitter Review

Scosche TZ4 iPod Bottom Dock Bluetooth Transmitter
Average Reviews:

First off, this is exactly the same item as the model designated TZ4R--I called Scosche to ask and they verified this.
This is one of the many Bluetooth 2.0 stereo trans mitters for iPod that's out there, and there are limitations associated with trying to play music over Bluetooth to your home stereo--at least, that's what I use it for. If you are concerned or want to know about Bluetooth stereo transmitters in general, you can find that info elsewhere. The distinctive about this one is that it allows for volume control from your iPod. This may seem like a no-brainer, but there are several brands of this similar product which do not allow for this--including the Sony and Miccus equivelents. The sound quality is actually really good (you have to boost the volume on your stereo a little bit). But it really does turn your iPod into a full-fledged remote in your hand! Highly recommended.

Sony D-NE320PSBLK Psyc MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman (Black) Review

Sony D-NE320PSBLK Psyc MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The person that claim it can't play his mp3 files? Well, either he is burning the disc wrong, or he has no clue what he is doing... This player works like a charm!
I am an engineer in the Consumer Electronics business, and deal with digital video and audio on a daily basis. Naturally, I am ULTRA MEGA picky. THIS IS THE BEST MP3 PLAYER, period!! The sound quality on this is simply amazing, far better than iPod and anything I've used so far. Panasonic is my favorite my overall brand, but Sony is blowing my expectations like crazy lately...
This player uses single AA battery, and the battery door is inside. Many companies have tried that design, but using two batteries and not able to shrink the size. Sony, however, made the player ultra thin and light weight. The battery compartment act as an elevator for the player, so it lift the player off the desk a little, but allows the rest of the player body to be very thin, very cool! The battery life on a single AA is claimed at 41 hours!!! Guess what? I got close to 50 hours!!! That's simply AMAZING. The player is tightly designed to be just super slightly larger than a regular CD. Without the AA battery, the player with a CD weights about a CD and its case (regular thickness case, not those thin cases).
User interface is very responsive, simple, yet elegant. The display is somewhat small, but with super fine pixels, it's able to display everything clearly! The player offers two types of sound enhancements, 1) equalizer 2) clearbass; each has multiple settings to tune to your taste. Sony also parted away from a big overhead headphone, and went with a tiny earbud type headphone. Unlike others, this little guy produces amazing bass and clarity. Lack of better words, I am amazed how much sound it can produce and how rich the sound is. I tested the player's operating system and user interface by repeatedly change settings and pushing buttons--something I do at work and drives my coworkers crazy, but the player never stutter, crash or lockup. Pretty stable software!!! YAY :)
Sony also made the directory browsing exceptionally quick and interactive... You can quickly find songs and traverse directories. Sony also achieved something NO other company has done so far, the preload/caching of each track is done soooooo fast; that it's almost as responsive as a regular audio CD when you switch tracks. The anti-shock is also awesome. It quickly loads the sound and stops the motor, so no matter how much you shake, it doesn't skip. Sony's anti-skip also work great during loading, so if you shake while the unit is buffering a song, you won't get corrupted playback like many cheap players. (Memorex, Audiovox, RCA, countless cheap crap from China, cough, cough ;)
I can go on and on about how much I like this... Sony priced this very very competitively, it's only about $15 more than some cheap Memorex junk, and the price is actually lower than Panasonic's. The cost difference is EASILY justified for the money you will save in batteries.
This is one finely engineered product!!! Go buy one, and you will agree with me!

Combining a lightweight body, stylish good looks, and an impressive array of technical features, this Sony Psyc CD Walkman is a great fit for music fans of all stripes. The Walkman boasts an intriguing "stereo black" dimpled cover encircled by a translucent orange ring, giving it a high-tech yet playful look that's quite unique among personal CD players. The flashy appearance extends to the matching clip remote, which lets listeners control the device with their thumb while exercising, and the pair of stereo headphones. More significantly, the device is far more than just a straightforward CD player, with compatibility for MP3, ATRAC3, and ATRAC3PLUS formats when burned onto a CD-R or CD-R disc. ATRAC3PLUS is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3PLUS, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting users select the right balance between fidelity and storage space. The end result is a huge increase in CD-R/RW capacity, as each disc can hold as many as 490 ATRAC3PLUS songs when compressed to 48 kbps.
To assist listeners in managing the ATRAC3 and ATRAC3PLUS files, Sony has included a copy of its SonicStage software with each Psyc CD Walkman. The simple-to-use program helps you create your own music compilations on CD-R/RW media using your computer's CD burner. The software is also compatible with Sony's Connect Music store, which offers an extensive online music library with a huge catalog of songs available for quick and easy download. Once the songs are burned to a disc, listeners can glean track, album, and artist information from the Walkman's three-line LCD text display, which comes with multi-language support for greater versatility.
As with any good personal CD player, the Psyc CD Walkman offers anti-skip protection in the form of Sony's Skip-Free G-Protection technology, which helps the device quickly recover from both horizontal and vertical shocks to improve the listening experience. G-Protection is particularly valuable while jogging, skating, or pursuing other outdoor activities. The Walkman's audio performance stems from such features as its Digital Mega Bass Sound, which produces rich, deep bass tones with extremely limited harmonic distortion; Sony's Parametric Equalizer II, which gives listeners extremely precise control over the tonal balance; and a two-position Automatic Volume Limiter System, which consistently maintains the volume output at levels below the distortion threshold so that the sound is always clean and precise.
Additional features include a five-direction control key, which gives you single-button control over five individual functions; 18 playback modes, including repeat, program, and random; and an automatic shutoff feature that powers the player down when it's not in use to conserve battery power. The Walkman runs for up to 41 hours on a single AA battery and comes with a one-year parts warranty.
About Sony Connect Music Store and ATRAC3plus Sony's Connect Music store offers one of the most extensive music collections online. Customers can choose single tracks or entire albums from independent and major-label artists for purchase and download. Sony's proprietary ATRAC3plus is an advanced audio compression and Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology offering multiple bit rates that allows you to create music compilations tailored to your listening preference. Songs downloaded and burned onto CD-R/RW media using ATRAC3plus technology can be played on any device that supports ATRAC3plus.
What's in the Box Sony D-NE320PSBLK CD Walkman, stereo headphones, remote control, SonicStage software CD-ROM, user's manual.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD, DVD-Audio, and VRS Technology Review

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD, DVD-Audio, and VRS Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second high definition player. I bought a Samsung BD-UP5000 when they were first released since it played both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Poor support, lack-luster performance and the end of HD DVDs left me wanting something "better". I found what I was looking for in the Oppo BDP-83.
Oppo is a customer-driven company and conducted an extended beta test to uncover bugs. The beta testers had to accept the state of the player before it could be released! I've emailed Oppo support a few times and they are prompt to respond with real answers not just an automated or canned response - usually the same day. I can't say enough good things about the company.
The '83 is rock solid. It has not frozen or even hiccuped once. It plays all the discs I've put in. (The 5000 had trouble with some and often required the discs to be fingerprint free and occationally locked up requiring restart to even eject a disc.)
To me, one of the important features of a disc player is SD DVD upscaling. Standard definition can look pretty bad on a HDTV. Even the networks and cable channels often do a marginal job up-converting. My 5000 had a very good upconverter (Reon) but the '83 is better - something you'd expect from a company that focused on SD DVD players long after the introduction of HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Sometimes I forget I'm watching SD material!
Most high def players are sluggish, acting more like underpowered computers than audio/video gear. Boot and disc load times often exceed 30 seconds. Not the '83 - it's responds more like a DVD player than a computer. The tray opens in under 3 seconds from pressing the eject button (with power off) and playback begins in under 10 seconds (for SD DVD). For Blu-Ray, play start does depend on what enhancements the content provider loads before playback can begin (custom menus, etc.). (Remember Blu-Ray discs allow the content provider lots of control over the player and playback of the content.)
The '83 decodes all advanced audio formats: Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, etc. So the lossless audio is available via 7.1 analog outs as well as PCM over HDMI. You don't need an A/V receiver that includes decoders for these formats - the player does the work. Speaker management provided by the '83 makes the 7.1 analog outputs usable, but with some limitations: The bass management frequency is fixed at 80 Hz, and there are limitations to speaker distance delays.
The user manual explains things so that the user/installer can make important setup and usage decisions. For example, there is a section that explains the various output resolutions and which is best for various scenarios; and another that helps choose the correct "zoom" for various disc and TV aspect combinations.
So often, modern computer-based A/V gear is released without a complete set of features with the promise of adding them later. Again the '83 was released fully featured so there's little to wait for. But Oppo realizes there will be bugs to fix and new features to add as well as new disc behavior to support. They've provided THREE separate ways to upgrade firmware: via a network connection, via CD/DVD or USB memory.
I use a universal remote to control all my A/V gear and thanks to a document provided by Oppo, I was able to program my remote prior to receiving the unit. Most of the commands use the same data as their previous players so I was able to start with the configuration for an older mode. Oppo provided an Excel file with all the control codes in a format that can be imported into Universal Remote Control and Pronto remotes (maybe others). I've never seen this level of support from any other consumer electronics company and this material existed BEFORE product release. Where documentation was lacking, customer support provided the missing information.
There's been one (public beta) firmware update and a user manual update since the '83 was released at the beginning of June 2009. The firmware update was fast and painless (via USB memory).
My one compliant of the BDP-83 is it's power cord. It uses a 2-pin connector resembling an IEC connector found on many pro and prosumer equipment, however there is not sufficient holding tension and the cord has unplugged itself from the unit twice. I had to wrap the cord around one of the feet to prevent it from happening again.

This dock is listed as a Droid dock, but as you probably already know (but just in case you don't), it's a generic smartphone dock, the identical dock is also listed under probably every name brand smartphone there is. Not that that's a bad thing, just want to be clear on what to expect.
The construction feels pretty solid, sure it's plastic but that gooseneck thing is nice and sturdy. The one-size-fits-all mechanism is compatible with the Droid, doesn't block any connections or buttons, though the end that says "audio cable" is at the other end from where the Droid's audio jack should go -- fortunately, the plug reaches, so it's no problem. To get it solidly mounted, it takes a pretty hard squeeze - there's a click right before it's solidly in there which will keep the Droid in if it's balanced, but it would fall out easily, so *squeeze* until you get the next click. I find using both hands helps.
The plug fits in the car lighter socket fairly solidly - but it seems a good idea to make sure that the gooseneck is bent and the adjustable arm tightened down so that the phone is balanced over the arm -- especially if you tend to pull a little g-force in turns :). I have only had it in portrait orientation so far, but it seems like it'll be no problem to use either way. EDIT: meh. It doesn't seem to be all that flexible, however, I have it "sort of" landscape. Will take pics & and post here.
You'll probably want the screen not to go to sleep - it's awkward to fumble for the button then unlock the phone, especially since the gripper arms kind of get in the way of doing that full, across-the-screen swipe to unlock -- and it kind of defeats the purpose of making the phone safer and easier to use in the car if you're fumbling. Also, while the lighter-plug mount supports the weight of a phone pretty well, it does move around quite a bit when you apply any sort of hand-force. Tapping the screen is fine, but trying to press the wake-up button, it's not meant to hold it steady for that. I use the Locale app to tell my phone if it's plugged in to keep the screen on (unless I'm at home) so I don't have to change the display timeout every time I get in the car.
Slightly bad thing: when talking on the phone, it comes over the speakers nicely, but the phone can't be in speaker mode, so the person on the other end is hearing you like you're talking with the phone several feet from your face. Luckily the Droid has that awesome call clarity :) You can definitely hear a little static while on calls, but it's not terrible, and the fact you're listening to phone calls over your car stereo makes up for it.
The first time I tried listening to music, I could hardly hear static at all, the second time, I heard a little more - I've never experienced a portable audio device fm-transmitter without a little static. At medium volume it becomes almost unnoticeable, however I'm sure audiophiles would find it very annoying. But audiophiles probably don't use portable audio device fm-transmitters in cars anyway, so no worries. (I have tried it tuned to 88.1, then, tried 100.1, which was less static-y, so, do play with the frequencies, your area will no doubt be different.)
I'll update this review if my experience with this device changes as I use it under different conditions, but as it is I'm happy with my purchase, thrilled to have my whole music collection with me in the car, happy to be able to use the GPS without balancing the phone in the console, and keeping the Droid charged up is never a bad idea :)
