Motorola S805 Bluetooth D.J. Style Stereo Headset Review

Motorola S805 Bluetooth D.J. Style Stereo Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are now my 5th pair of bluetooth wireless headphones and I think I've finally found one that does just what I want: great sounding streaming music from my iPod and simultaneously make or take calls from my Blackberry.
In my typical fashion, let's begin with the good, move on to the bad and then finish with those things that need improvement.
GOOD
Excellent sound quality - Clear, clean and LOUD. What more can I say about it. This may seem obvious but apparently some people don't understand the many different profiles available with Bluetooth devices and which ones are necessary to get good sound quality from these headphones. In order to hear quality audio, your Bluetooth source must support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). Many of the USB dongle devices and quite a few built-in Bluetooth laptops (including MacBooks) and phones DON'T support this profile. How will know? First check the documentation to see if A2DP is listed as a supported profile. If not, try pairing with the headphones. If you hear tinny sounding music in mono, your device probably only supports the Headset and Handsfree (HPF) profiles. You'll need to find some other hardware or maybe a software upgrade.
Convenient - My S805s are paired with my iPod equipped with Wi-Gear's iMuffs MA110 Dock Adapter. This adapter is powered by the iPod and supports both the A2DP and Audio Video Remote Control (AVRCP) profiles allowing the headphone to control the volume, play/pause and next/prev track of the iPod while getting the great sound you expect. With no wires to get tangled or swing around when you move, these are great for workouts on the treadmill or elliptical.
Battery Life - Motorola claims that these fully charged headphones will operate in standby mode for up 30 days! I haven't had an opportunity to test this out and I not quite sure exactly what is "standby" mode, but I do know that the music play time is good for about a week of bus rides and occasional office use--about 15 hours. Not bad for the volume and quality.
Nice carrying case - the S805 comes with a durable semi-rigid zippered ballistic nylon case that holds the headphones with the earpieces folded flat at 2 inches thick. There's even a strap inside to conveniently hold the charger and the wired adapter cable.
Elegant Design - The headphones are very nice to look at once you get past the bulk (more on that next). They are symmetrically designed with a single button on each earpiece. One side controls the phone the other the music. The volume and track skip controls are ingeniously integrated into the rubber trim rings of each earpiece. Twist the left one forward or backward to change the volume or the right one to skip or repeat tracks.
BAD
Bulky - While the over-the-ear design is really effective at blocking outside noise, they are also very large and rather obvious. Especially with the blinking blue lights on the side. This attracts a lot of strange looks since you resemble a Borg. BTW, the blue lights can be turn off but I often forget since they default to "ON" after your recharge.
Cheap plastic parts - These definitely aren't your Bose QuietComforts. Most of the plastic pieces feel very cheap and appear as if they would easily break if dropped. The little rubber flap covering the charging and wired adapter ports is very flimsy and I don't expect it to last very long. The volume adjustment control dial and the track control dial have a lot of slop and wiggle room. I'd have to say that the case is better made than the headphones.
Short Wired Adapter - The wired adapter cord is very short. Less than a meter long so you need to be very close to your wired device.
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT
Scratchy Fabric on Headband - The fabric inside of the headband is same acoustic fabric as the inside of the earpieces. I often take these off and dangle them around my neck but the fabric is kind of irritating. A smooth fabric would be much more comfortable.
Earpiece Cushions - The soft vinyl earpieces aren't too uncomfortable, but the do make the area around my ears all sweaty, especially during a workout. They're also kind of tight so they don't slip off your head but the pressure begin to get uncomfortable after a while. But if don't like the headphones with eartips that go into your ears, these are minor issues.
Complicated Controls - Although two buttons make for elegant design, it also makes for a confusing array of functions that you must remember to control them. Press and hold for 6 seconds for pairing mode. Press and hold for 2 seconds to turn them off. Press, hold and wait for three blinks to turn off. Short press to answer a call, long press to reject a call or answer a call waiting or redial the last call (all depending on the current state). Yikes! That's a lot to remember.
Minimal Instructions - The instruction booklet is a double-sided sheet of paper with a minimal amount of information to get you started. There are two paragraphs of troubleshooting along with a support number and web URL. If you can't get these to work as expected, don't expect to get much help.

AKG K 242 HD High-Definition Headphones Review

AKG K 242 HD High-Definition Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
AKG headphones are some of the best designed headphones you can buy, both in terms of product design (comfort, aesthetics, functionality) and engineering (sound quality is amazing!). The AKG K 242 HD's are no exception. They sound fantastic, are a joy to wear, and have a build quality rarely seen in products today (the gimbal suspension system for the earcups and the self adjusting metal wire frame are two very well designed features, unique to AKG). Like most high end audio equipment, one should expect a ramp up in sound quality as the product gets broken in (which is a good thing as they will only get better with use). Out of the box these headphones sound great (as far as my non-audiophile aural senses can discern). As is the case with most AKG headphones of this line the bass is a bit lean, but is very well balanced. In my opinion, the fact that I consider them bass-lean is simply a condition of the inferior quality of audio experiences most of us experience in our lives (see "movie theater bass overload").
All in all these are a great pair of cans, but not without criticism. The semi-open design is intended to be a solution to the delicate balancing between sound isolation (both user based and environment base; ie. exterior sound coming in and produced sound going out)and sound quality, however this pair is EXTREMELY poor at isolating sound. Even at unamplified, computer generated (I have no sound card or computer-based sound amplification) moderate volumes these headphones essentially broadcast whatever is playing inside the unit to the outside environment. There is essentially no sound isolation for the user either, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you expect to be using these headphones in a public environment (school, library, office, bus, etc.) expect to hear everything around you, and expect everyone else to hear everything you hear as well!
Now, I've spoken to some of my audiophile friends on this issue and a typical response is that "you're listening to your music too loud!". Not at all. I'm not talking about exorbitant levels of sound here; imagine you are listening to classical music at a sound level analogous to a quiet conversation, this level of sound is being heard by ALL, user and those around. What you hear is essentially what everyone else hears. The reason I speak so lengthy on a subject that has little to do with sound quality is because you won't find any reviews that speak of this problem. Either all the consumers of this product just don't care, or the issue is something that is trumped by the overall quality of the product (I will reiterate that the sound produced by these things are really great, I would have given five stars if it hadn't been for the sound leak issue).
Conclusion: These headphones are amazing!....that is for home and private use! Probably not the best for studio monitoring (sound leak will definitely leak into an open mike) and terrible for places where social etiquette should be observed (libraries, study halls, schools, offices, etc.). I would recommend, with caveats.

Logitech FreePulse Wireless Headphones Review

Logitech FreePulse Wireless Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PROS:
1. Works in a nearby room or directly above/below the room with the transmitter.
2. Able to hear outside sounds, if you don't want to be completely isolated from your surroundings.
3. Nice to be able to adjust the volume by touching the shell of the right earpad, which acts as a toggle switch.
4. Comes with a short cord in case the dongle won't fit in your unit's audio jack.
CONS:
1. Sound quality is muddy. If you like rock music, you will not hear much of the cymbals or other high notes. It is fine if you listen to spoken voice. The stock earbuds with the Nano 2G are a little better than the Logitech, but with less bass. My Sony MDR-V6 closed-ear cans sound *exceptionally* good with my 2nd Gen Nano. I'll give the Logitech headphones many additional hours to break in, but I had hoped they would sound much better out of the box.
2. Headband is not adjustable and sits close to your neck. Tilting your head back, even slightly, bumps the headband. Wearing a collared shirt also causes your shirt to contact the headband. The around-the-ear part of the headband takes most of the impact. The earpads will move a little. Some collar brushing comes through to the earpads. I think exercising would not go well.
3. Comfortable on the ears for less than an hour.
4. Little if any difference in bass boost and normal.
5. Comes with 6 iPod interfaces, but the Nano interface does not work with the 2nd Gen Nano. You can still plug the dongle into the headphone jack, but without the end cap for the dongle, there is a 2mm gap.
6. It's just more than twice the width of the Nano 2G. It is also slightly offset, left-to-right when looking at the Nano + dongle from the front.
7. I generally had to try to set the connection twice before it sync'd up. Then I needed to start the player right away, because if I waited 30 seconds, it shut itself off.
I posted a couple of pictures if you click on the link at the top of the page.

got these as a gift from my friend. Im no audiophile but i can say these are the best headphones I have ever listened to. I own sennheiser 595s and a pair of bose qc2 for work. My only gripe is the comfort, i really don't enjoy the velvet "on-ear" feel of the headphones, and they cause my ears to hurt after about 3 hours. Other than that though i can say these are a very attractive looking great sounding set of headphones.

Etymotic Research HF2 Earphones / Headset (iPhone Compatible) - Black Review

Etymotic Research HF2 Earphones / Headset (iPhone Compatible) - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You've seen those people with earphone-mic combos for those phones - you know, *those* people who walk around, holding the mic up to their mouth, who might as well pull out the earphone and just hold the phone up to their ear. Are they uncomfortable, thinking that the mic won't pick up their voice, or are they compensating for a lackluster microphone? If the latter, that will not be necessary with the Etymotic HF2 earphone headset, whose mic is every bit as strong as the one built into most phones, if not better.
I tested this set with an Iphone 3G, and those on the other end were not able to guess that I was on a headset microphone rather than the Iphone's admittedly high-quality mic - that's a great compliment right there. The mic, which hangs about three inches below the right earphone, seems to be able to filter out background noises, as well. As for controls, it's simple - there's one button on rectangular microphone unit. Press once to answer or hang up a call, twice to send a call to voicemail.
As for sound quality of the headphones, they're fantastic, and that's no surprise given the pedigree associated with the Etymotic name. I'm an Ety fan - I have a pair of Ety ER6i as well as their "big brother" the ER4P, and the sound quality of the HF2 ranks right around the ER6i, which should be excellent for most people. Those not familiar with the "Etymotic sound," it is extremely clean, and many may find it lacking in bass, but it is very true to the recorded sound, unlike many other cheaper (and sometimes similarly priced) earphones. What you hear with Etymotics is a very accurate, if sometimes stark, representation of the sound that the artists captured. They are not good headphones for those looking for huge bass response. Those who enjoy jazz and great detail in their music might just love the Etymotic sound - they truly are an audiophile company. And when it comes to calls, there's also a small thrill to be had that first time you talk to someone and hear them in stereo through these earphones if you've never experienced it before. The world is blocked out due to the earphones' superior sound-dampening abilities, and the caller on the other end is extremely clear.
A note about fit and sound quality: these in-ear 'phone are meant to seat deep in your ear, sealed with your ear canal. When seated properly, they will deliver incredible sound quality and beautiful, solid bass - but not the deep, head-rattling bass you may be accustomed to from other head-and ear-phones. If they aren't seated properly, wet the tip just slightly, insert, and then turn just a bit to get them "snug down." The fit shouldn't hurt, but may feel odd at first. I found it took some getting used to and, yes, you will likely notice some earwax - you are, afterall, closing up your ears, so they will get warm. Clean the triple-flange tips from time to time and make sure your ears are as clean as possible. It sounds like a ritual, but it really is worth it for the extrmely high sound quality these earphones are capable of creating.
Other small details: where the two wires for the earphones connect to join into one is a slider to sinch up the wires . . . I assume if you want them close to your neck? Included on the wire is a clip that I found more annoying and cumbersome than useful. Thoughtful, yes, but not easy to remove, and I feared damaging the wire sleeve in doing so, so it stayed put. It simply made winding the wires up to put into the handy zipped leather pouch a job a little more clumsy than necessary. Also included are foam tips and smaller triple-flange tips for the earphones, replacement filters, and a filter replacement tool.
For owners of the first generation Iphone, the headphone jack is sized to fit into the recessed jack - no need for an awkward adapter.
So why only four stars if I enjoy these so much? (It would really be 4.5 stars if Amazon would let me offer it.) I balk a little at paying almost the price of the 8gb Iphone for a mic/earphone headset, even as high-quality as this one is. Another thing, and this is true of any headset, and so I don't mark this one down for it, your speaking voice does not come through the earphones. Normally that's not such an issue, but when you are listening to the other party in stereo, and you can only hear yourself as if through plugged ears, it's a little disorienting, and I found myself fighting the urge to speak louder. It would be nice if there were some way for your voice to be able to feedback into the earphones.
Overall, however, these are fantastic - miles above most typical headsets, but the price reflects that, too. If you spend a significant amount of time both listening to music and talking on your phone, and you truly treasure sound quality, these may make perfect sense.

I really like this product however, I own a deluxe set of earbuds that have a much thicker cord than average causing it to not stay locked into the little indentions meant to keep the cords secure. I will have to take a hobby knife and make modifications to the hole to accomidate bigger cords.
Otherwise, I would think this product works really well for your everyday, run of the mill, standard headphones/earbuds.

BlueAnt X5 Bluetooth Stereo Headset (Black) Review

BlueAnt X5 Bluetooth Stereo Headset (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bottom line: meet my expectations for a wireless set of headphones. I would buy again. I did several hours of research before purchasing these.
My applications: listening to mp3s while working out using my Palm Tx (direct connection, i.e. without streaming device) and watching TV on my computer using BeyondTV (using streaming device which plugs into the audio-out mini jack to mediate the Bluetooth connection)
Pros:
- compact, light, stylish/sleek
- impressive audio quality for wireless device; probably as good as iPod ear buds, but by no means competition for high fidelity headphones
- once audio begins streaming, no flashing lights (like Motorola bluetooth headphones)
- no noticable audio lag (due to on the fly compression) when watching video. Yes it does exist, but you have to be trying to detect it. Only purists would probably take issue.
Cons:
- more of the Bluetooth technology then this product, but headset seems susceptible to obstructions (walls, thick clothes even)
- easy to use, but again, more of the technology of Blutooth then product, depending on what you are connecting headset to (streamer vs phone or Palm) can be a bit of a pain pairing when first learning to use. However learning curve is extremely short

This definitely keeps your earbud cords bound together. However, this "smart wrap" has ruined my headphones. I've had the same type of headphones that came with my mp3 player twice. The first set I had lasted me at least a year before they started going fuzzy and crackly...and that was without ANY tricks or contraptions to try to keep them tidy. So I replaced the original pair for exact duplicates. I had those for only 4 months before I ordered and started using the smart wrap. After no more than 2-3 weeks use I noticed the sound quality of my headphones was deteriorating. I can't use my headphones anymore because the quality is so bad.
I don't care enough to get a refund for the item because it was so cheap and earbuds are cheap enough to replace. Plus I knew I was taking a chance when making the order because there were no customer reviews for the product. I hope that someone else out there can learn from my experience and not make the same mistake I did and save a little extra time and money.

I've tried out several pairs of noise canceling headphones and bluetooth headsets, and this one does its job well both in noise canceling (comparable to $100 pairs by audiotechnica, except it is not circumaural) and in bluetooth pairing (clearly excels over the Motorola S9)
Its bluetooth setting take a little getting used to, but once you know that you do not need to re-pair the headphones even if you switch between audio sources and that the play/pause button actually serves as a bluetooth-reconnect button if you wander out of range, they are really very intuitive.
The headphone's microchip sports two audio-modes instead of two audio streams for its Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (HQ music) and Hands Free Profile (mobile)... This surprised me at first, but it actually allows you to have a lot of freedom.
Battery life is great with a 10+ hours of continuous music streaming (experimentally) and a mere 1.5 hour (also experimental) charge time.
I can't say enough good things about this product. Asides from the mentioned items it also has great sound quality, and the fold-up ability is pretty handy for mobility.
The only two things I would've liked for it is to not look so cheap and to have came with a carrying pouch that is its size (and not like 3X larger)

This is a head-set with a plug in jack with volume control. Bluetooth is a wireless technology, there is no use of "Bluetooth Technology" in this product.

The adapter and earphones worked great for a while but the adapter soon began to come apart. with a lot of care the adapter kept working, at least longer than the headset. It also soon after i got them one side stopped working. But then again all the headsets of this kind I have bought for my cell phone has stopped working from one side. This has actually been the longest that the headset has worked.

Creative Aurvana Live Headphones Review

Let me start by saying I am totally happy with these headphones. They are ultra-comfortable, sound quality is nice, and they look great. Keep in mind these are not professional quality headphones. The sound quality is pretty good, just not quite the level of the Sony studio monitor headphones. That said, if you just want some headphones to use for gaming or casual music listening then this kit is more than adequate. There is some bass, a nice range of sound and it is generally crisp and clear. I sampled a number of different electronic genres ranging from ambient to trance to dubstep, and it all sounded good. I also played some different games using these headphones and they hold up. They are also probably the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn, and that says a lot. Even wearing glasses they do not put any pressure on my ears at all. They are also pretty light and unobtrusive. The cord is rather short (which I like). Works well if you have a jack on your desk within arms length but it comes with an extension cord if necessary. Really I don't think I could be more happy with them. If you are producing audio you may want to look at the higher end, but if you are just a casual user you can't go wrong with these headphones.
