HTC Aria Android Phone (AT&T) Review

HTC Aria Android Phone (ATandT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, my wife and I have been using our new Aria phones for about a week now. I switched from a Blackberry Bold and she was using a 1st generation iPhone (although hers didn't have any data plan). We also purchased one of the 3G MicroCells from AT&T at the same time - so our cell signal at home is now better than I thought would be possible.
As far as our profiles go: I'm a tech addict - I work at home as a C/C++ programmer and tend to be an early adopter of anything tech related. My wife is kind of the opposite - she relies on me to keep the tech stuff going and tends to resist new technology since she knows it can often be more of a headache than it is worth:).
Fortunately, this phone is working for both of us. The Android OS has been great - although there are some features in the next version (Froyo) that I wish were on this phone already. I spent several hours yesterday figuring out how to 'root' this phone and I did end up getting it done last night. My wife's went a lot faster since I already understood the process.
Here are some things I like about the Aria:
1) The size of the Aria is perfect. It is smaller than either the Blackberry Bold or the iPhone, yet the screen is very usable. This is a very 'pocketable' phone.
2) The touch screen works great. It supports all the common touch controls like zooming, swiping, etc...
3) There is a version of Kindle available for Android! And it works great - I'll still use my Kindle, but this will work when I'm out without it.
4) I like being able to mix programs and widgets on each screen. It took a few days of playing with it, but we both now have our phones setup to work well for us.
5) The text input works well; but, if you decide to root your phone, do yourself a favor and install the latest version of Swype. This has turned out to be an unbelievably great method of inputting text and both my wife and I are loving it for e-mails and texting!
6) The selection of apps available to this phone through the market is great! I've been able to find apps for everything I want, and I'm looking into writing some myself just to see how it works.
7) The voice quality is excellent. When I first started using the phone I would get that 'Wow!' impression every time I talked to someone - even when out of range of the MicroCell.
8) Web browsing is very snappy and easy. This is an area where the Blackberry really sucked, so I'm loving the real browser with Flash.
9) Once I figured out the task switching and status bar at the top, I've found them very useful. On the other hand, I'm not sure my wife will ever take the time to look into those features.
10) I really like that I can get both my personal e-mail (GMail) and work e-mail (Exchange) - and they integrate together very intuitively. I'm using multiple GMail accounts on this phone with no problem.
11) This is one of those phones that really doesn't need a protective case. The back cover is 'rubbery' and easy to grip - and actually seems to be as protective as any additional cover would be. I like the protective cover much more than the decorative cover that comes on the iPhone (that most people end up covering anyway).
12) This phone supports pattern unlocking; which is a much easier form of security than typing a PIN or password. Once again, this is an area where Android comes through against the iPhone. (NOTE: If you connect to Exchange, the pattern unlock feature can be disabled by your Exchange policy - but this can be worked around if you're willing to do some tweaking.)
13) I've been playing around with the voice input for a couple of days and it works great (although it isn't perfect). You can use it anywhere you can enter text - and it just converts your voice to text. I've been alternating between voice input and Swype, depending on whether other people are around who would make fun of me talking to my phone. :)
Things I'm looking forward to:
1) This phone does not support voice dialing through BlueTooth - but the next version (Froyo) does. I am excited to get that feature on this phone.
2) This phone has some nice accessories that seem to be in the pipeline, but they aren't available yet. iPhones, on the other hand, have gobs of accessories available from day one. (My wife wants a red cover for hers so we can tell them apart more easily.)
Things that could be improved:
1) As with any phone, I think we can always wish for better battery life. If I use the phone non-stop through the day (which I did at first), the battery will last an entire day. I can get through about 2 days of normal use without charging. There is an app called 'Advanced Task Killer' in the market that helps with battery life.
2) I wish there was a way to change sound profiles when charging. I found a program called 'Setting Profiles Lite' that does this, but it seems like it should be built into the Android OS like it is in the Blackberry.
3) The contact manager could be improved. When sending a text, for example, it gives the option of every phone number for a contact instead of just mobile numbers...
Anyway, I've probably yammered on enough already; but I really am enjoying this phone. If you're using AT&T, and looking for an alternative to the over-hyped iPhone, then I think this is probably THE phone to get at this point.

Works great and as described. Includes two cords for mini or micro USB. A little sloppy with the cords running everywhere. Also, relies on your phone's microphone, so each time I used as a speakerphone I could hear them great but they couldn't hear me.
A+ for music
C- for speakerphone

BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway Review

BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway
Average Reviews:

If your car has an auxilliary input on it's radio and a cigarette lighter, you can take A2DP-capable bluetooth device and play high-quality music through your stereo with this device. (Note: some sellers include the Blackberry car charger with this device, if not, you'll need to buy one.)
Pairing this device with my Droid was relatively easy: just plug it in, select it from the list of available devices, enter a pairing code and the Droid automatically reconnected with the gateway every time I started my car from that point forward, allowing me to play MP3s and Pandora radio through my Acura's stereo without a problem.
One thing to keep in mind when you use this device in a car is that you'll still have to position your playback unit where you can operate it safely while driving. The iPod and most smartphones have windshield and or vent mounts that keep the unit in your line of site while driving, and I'd HIGHLY recommend that you buy such a mount at the same time you buy this device, if you don't already have one.

Advanced Car Mount System FM Transmitter & Charger for ANDROID Phones - HTC, Google, T-Mobile, Motorola, Samsung Review

Advanced Car Mount System FM Transmitter and Charger for ANDROID Phones - HTC, Google, T-Mobile, Motorola, Samsung

Bought this will some trepidation reading some of the other reviews but it works amazingly with the Sprint HTC Hero. It comes with a mini USB Power plug and some other adapter for some devices. Not sure what it is for. It also has the right sized audio plug for the Sprint HTC Hero. The FM transmitter is clear and easy to use. Just set it and forget it. It remembers the station between power cycles. I listen to music when traveling and when a call comes in the music on the Hero pauses and the call comes through. Music and phone calls are clear. Listening to music and the Sprint Navigation at the same time is interesting but that is an issue with the Hero, not this product.
One downside that I found was the placement of the USB power outlet on the device. It is on the right side and I feel that it just sticks out there. It hasn't been a problem though. The other downside is the audio plug should have been a 90 degree plug because it sticks out of the top of the Hero a bit too far.

Etymotic Research HF2 Hands-Free Earphone Headset with Microphone (Cobalt Blue, iPhone Compatible) Review

Etymotic Research HF2 Hands-Free Earphone Headset with Microphone (Cobalt Blue, iPhone Compatible)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You've seen those people with earphone-mic combos for those phones - you know, *those* people who walk around, holding the mic up to their mouth, who might as well pull out the earphone and just hold the phone up to their ear. Are they uncomfortable, thinking that the mic won't pick up their voice, or are they compensating for a lackluster microphone? If the latter, that will not be necessary with the Etymotic HF2 earphone headset, whose mic is every bit as strong as the one built into most phones, if not better.
I tested this set with an Iphone 3G, and those on the other end were not able to guess that I was on a headset microphone rather than the Iphone's admittedly high-quality mic - that's a great compliment right there. The mic, which hangs about three inches below the right earphone, seems to be able to filter out background noises, as well. As for controls, it's simple - there's one button on rectangular microphone unit. Press once to answer or hang up a call, twice to send a call to voicemail.
As for sound quality of the headphones, they're fantastic, and that's no surprise given the pedigree associated with the Etymotic name. I'm an Ety fan - I have a pair of Ety ER6i as well as their "big brother" the ER4P, and the sound quality of the HF2 ranks right around the ER6i, which should be excellent for most people. Those not familiar with the "Etymotic sound," it is extremely clean, and many may find it lacking in bass, but it is very true to the recorded sound, unlike many other cheaper (and sometimes similarly priced) earphones. What you hear with Etymotics is a very accurate, if sometimes stark, representation of the sound that the artists captured. They are not good headphones for those looking for huge bass response. Those who enjoy jazz and great detail in their music might just love the Etymotic sound - they truly are an audiophile company. And when it comes to calls, there's also a small thrill to be had that first time you talk to someone and hear them in stereo through these earphones if you've never experienced it before. The world is blocked out due to the earphones' superior sound-dampening abilities, and the caller on the other end is extremely clear.
A note about fit and sound quality: these in-ear 'phone are meant to seat deep in your ear, sealed with your ear canal. When seated properly, they will deliver incredible sound quality and beautiful, solid bass - but not the deep, head-rattling bass you may be accustomed to from other head-and ear-phones. If they aren't seated properly, wet the tip just slightly, insert, and then turn just a bit to get them "snug down." The fit shouldn't hurt, but may feel odd at first. I found it took some getting used to and, yes, you will likely notice some earwax - you are, afterall, closing up your ears, so they will get warm. Clean the triple-flange tips from time to time and make sure your ears are as clean as possible. It sounds like a ritual, but it really is worth it for the extrmely high sound quality these earphones are capable of creating.
Other small details: where the two wires for the earphones connect to join into one is a slider to sinch up the wires . . . I assume if you want them close to your neck? Included on the wire is a clip that I found more annoying and cumbersome than useful. Thoughtful, yes, but not easy to remove, and I feared damaging the wire sleeve in doing so, so it stayed put. It simply made winding the wires up to put into the handy zipped leather pouch a job a little more clumsy than necessary. Also included are foam tips and smaller triple-flange tips for the earphones, replacement filters, and a filter replacement tool.
For owners of the first generation Iphone, the headphone jack is sized to fit into the recessed jack - no need for an awkward adapter.
So why only four stars if I enjoy these so much? (It would really be 4.5 stars if Amazon would let me offer it.) I balk a little at paying almost the price of the 8gb Iphone for a mic/earphone headset, even as high-quality as this one is. Another thing, and this is true of any headset, and so I don't mark this one down for it, your speaking voice does not come through the earphones. Normally that's not such an issue, but when you are listening to the other party in stereo, and you can only hear yourself as if through plugged ears, it's a little disorienting, and I found myself fighting the urge to speak louder. It would be nice if there were some way for your voice to be able to feedback into the earphones.
Overall, however, these are fantastic - miles above most typical headsets, but the price reflects that, too. If you spend a significant amount of time both listening to music and talking on your phone, and you truly treasure sound quality, these may make perfect sense.

The hf2 is a high-fidelity, hands-free noise-isolating headset and earphones combination. But it's really much, much more than that. The hf2 provides a near-perfect music experience. Made by Etymotic Research, the people who created in-ear earphones, the hf2 delivers Etymotic's world-renowned sound quality in a comfortable, convenient wireless phone headset, so you'll never miss a call! Headset includes a high-sensitivity microphone and a Music/Call button that allows you to quickly answer calls while contolling your music. You'll be able to hear and be heard, clearly, even in a noisy environment. The hf2 includes the in-ear headset and earphones, assorted eartips so you can find the ones that fit you best, carry pouch and filter changing tool with filters. Works with iPhone, including 3Gs and other music phones that operate with a 3.5 mm/4-contact phone + stereo plug. Compatible with most music players (e.g., iPod, mp3, CD) that accept a 3.5 mm stereo plug. hf2 headset + earphones can be worn with the cables in front or in back of the head. The cable slider can be adjusted by moving it up or down for a snug fit.

Clarion FZ709 MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver with USB Port Review

Clarion FZ709 MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver with USB Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: After using this for a week I had to lower my review by a star. The lack of physical buttons has really made this receiver difficult to use while driving. With no station preset buttons you have to fumble around with the controls in multiple steps just to change the station. Unfortunately, you won't find a cheaper receiver with bluetooth and A2DP streaming. There's no dedicated Phone button, so once again you have to fumble around to make a call and because of the lack of a control knob, dialing a number is a lesson in frustration.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This receiver is an unbelievable deal. Everywhere else it's almost $300 but I got it for $129 here.
This is a cd-less receiver and because there are no moving parts it generates little heat. I have not used a CD in years and I bought this unit because of that and because it has A2DP wireless bluetooth audio streaming. No more wires connected to my iPhone! If you have an internet audio App (I use TuneIn Radio) you can listen to any station on the internet.
It looks great and there are no physical buttons but unfortunately you have to actually look at the unit to see where the volume control is. I would have appreciated some sort of tactile feedback such as a texture so I can keep my eyes on the road.
As with most receivers these days, the FZ709 comes with a pointless remote control. What are you supposed to do with it? Tape it to the steering wheel?
Pro's: Great-looking, a bargain, sounds fantastic, A2DP bluetooth wireless audio streaming, no mechanical parts to break, packed with features.
Con's: No physical volume knob, can't change the OLED color to match your gauges, "buttons" are sometimes unresponsive, can't change the display during A2DP streaming, clock is barely visible.

If you've given up CDs for the convenience and economy of MP3, WMA or AAC files, then Clarion's future-forward FZ709 is for you. Why bother carrying around CDs if you've already ripped them to your PC anyway? The FZ709 does away with the standard CD player and instead offers a USB port for direct control of your iPod or streaming of your digital audio files from a USB device. Connect your iPod or thumb drive and enjoy hours of music and a clean touch-sensitive interface. What's more, the FZ709 features built-in Bluetooth, for hands-free calling or streaming of audio from compatible devices. Expand your options even further by adding SAT radio, connecting your steering wheel remote, or adding more power via the three preamp outputs. And if you really want to spin a scratched-up old CD, connect a portable player to the unit's auxiliary input.

Sleek Touch-Sensitive Front Panel The FZ709 features a clean, multi-line OEL (Organic Electro-Luminescence) display that responds to your touch. Only the buttons you need for your current task are displayed, so there's less fumbling for the right button.
Digital--Not Physical--Media The FZ709 plays MP3, WMA and iTunes AAC Compatible files directly from USB devices, complete with ID3-TAG display for track information like artist and song title.
AM/FM Radio No matter how futuristic everything else gets, sometimes you just want to listen to the radio. Store your favorite radio stations on the 18 FM and six AM presets.
Built-in Bluetooth Connect with various devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and MP3 Players via the unit's built-in wireless Bluetooth interface. Supports popular Bluetooth profiles including A2DP/AVRCP for audio streaming and HFP/OPP for hands-free operation, so you can easily communicate and listen to your favorite music to your vehicles audio system. Wired microphone is supplied for crystal clear telephony.
Direct USB iPod Control and USB Audio Streaming No adapter box required. Just connect the USB cable that's included with your iPod to the Clarion source unit's rear USB input and you get complete control of your iPod including genre/album/song title search using iPod's control wheel, with high quality sound reproduction through the car speakers. The same connection can also be used to play back audio files stored on USB memory.
What's more, using the optional CCA723 iPod video cable and additional monitor, your passengers can enjoy iPod video.
BBE MP for Better Sounding MP3/WMA/AAC Files BBE MP (Minimized Polynomial Non-Linear Saturation) Process improves digitally compressed sound such as MP3/WMA/ AAC by restoring the harmonics that are lost through compression, thereby reproducing the warmth, details and nuances that you would otherwise miss. BBE MP enhanced harmonics even serve to make regular CDs sound better.
Beat EQ for User Customizable Sound In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns--BASS BOOST, IMPACT, and EXCITE--Clarion's BeatEQ even lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience.
Auxiliary Input With a rear auxiliary input, it's easy to plug-in a portable audio device, portable satellite radio, or other external audio gadgets (yes, including CD players) for instantaneous enjoyment.
Built-in High Pass/Low Pass Crossovers Crossover settings of 50Hz, 80Hz and 120Hz are available, letting you optimize the signal for high or low frequency reproduction when a subwoofer or tweeters are part of the system.
Ready to Expand The FZ709 gives you a 50W x 4 built-in amplifier to begin with, but if you'd like to add additional power to your system, three RCA preamp outs are provided.
It's also ready for an OEM steering wheel remote or XM/SIRIUS satellite radio, or Bluetooth to enjoy crystal clear sound and hands-free calling with supported devices.
Remote Control Included Control the action with the included wireless remote.

I bought the product to use with my Blackberry Curve 8350i phone. I wanted to utilize the hands free feature so that when I am using my GPS I can observe the map feature without holding my phone in one hand and driving with the other. I was also interested in utilizing the radio feature on this product.
Upon receiving the product I discovered that the phone jack was a 3.5mm type. My phone has a 2.5mm jack. I then had to order an adapter. Once I got it I discovered another problem with the unit. The phone jack doesn't quite match up inside the phone. If I inserted it all the way into my phone the signal to my car radio was only a buzzing sound. I had to gently maneuver the phone jack in and out to find the right position to transmit my audio from phone to car radio. Then in the process of making this adjustment it would cause my Blackberry to lock up. I would have to remove my phone battery and reinsert it to get my phone to reboot.
I resigned myself to the fact that I could not use this product to listen to my phone through my car radio. I was still interested in using it as a phone cradle and its cigarette lighter phone charging feature. Last weekend I took a trip in my Ford Explorer hoping to try out my new phone cradle. I got my second disappointment. Once on the road the road vibrations cause the cradle to spin from and upright position to an upside down position dumping my Blackberry out of the cradle. I guess in order to make this work properly I'll need to zip tie it to the dashboard to make it stay in an upright position.
The charging feature of the product works fine.
I am not sure I would recommend this product for those who have a Blackberry Curve 8350i phone and a Ford Explorer. As for me it was a waste of money.

I am super happy I bought this product, great for hands free calls, only downside is there is static in the background almost constantly. I'd still recommend this product to friends.

I had no idea an item like this existed until I stumbled across it on Amazon looking for a new FM Transmitter - Boy I'm glad I did! The idea is great and the product is awesome. The item feels very high quality and so far it works like a charm.
Pretty much all you do is pair your phone's Bluetooth with this device and you can listen to music on Pandora or music library directly through your car's speakers. It also allows for hands free calling also directly through your speakers. The item comes with a bunch of extra add-on accessories (steering wheel remote, other remote, headphones, audio cable for non-bluetooth devices, etc) but I haven't used any of them yet. All you really need is the main unit and your are off and running!
My buddy just got a new fully loaded Acura and it has all the bluetooth built in. I just got all his features for less than $50! Would recommend to anyone.

Sony MEX-BT3800U In-Dash CD Receiver MP3/WMA/AAC Player with Bluetooth Review

You get a lot for your money with this unit. Between the front auxiliary in, USB, and Bluetooth you have plethora of connectivity options so you should be able to connect anything to this unit for a long time. That's the unit's biggest plus. In fact, it can be a little bit annoying to have to switch through so many inputs via the source to get to the one you want (you can turn off aux in the settings though). You can also add optional HD Radio through an expensive adapter. I don't mind the lack of HD Radio since from what I've read, the execution isn't great yet with radios switching back and forth between the HD and analog signal and the signals themselves not being in sync.
The display is easy to read at a glance, and RDS (displays what is currently playing on the tuner) makes finding new radio stations easy. The iPod controls on the unit are a bit too complicated to bother learning, especially since you can use the iPod's own controls if you switch to "passenger mode". The buttons on the bottom of the unit used to switch stations and perform other operations have kind of a sharp edge a the bottom, which can make them sometimes a little painful to press if you don't aim high when you hit them. The USB will charge your iPod or other device fine.
The Bluetooth connectivity works really well, and sounds great. I use the Bluetooth stereo to stream music from my Motorola Droid with no problems. The Bluetooth hands free functionality is a bit basic since the unit won't display who is calling you, just that you have a call. Not that big of a deal at this price point. My phone will automatically pair the hands free profile when I turn the stereo on, but seems kind of hit or miss with pairing the Bluetooth stereo profile automatically. From using my phone with another Bluetooth speaker, it seems like it's more of an issue with the Droid.
One thing I find really strange with this unit is the remote functionality. If I use the head unit controls to turn on the unit / change source, the only control on the remote that will work is the off button. Vice versa, if you turn the unit on with the remote, all the remote functions work perfectly fine, but you can only use the volume controls on the head unit. Seek buttons, etc will not work. It took me a while to figure this out and at first I thought the remote control was defective. Again, this is not that big of deal to me since I would hardly use the remote, I just wish it was documented somewhere.

When I got the HTC Evo back at the beginning of June I just went to Wal Mart and picked up an FM transmitter there for 50 dollars, but it would only transmit to the radio but not charge the phone. For anyone who has an Evo, you know that the battery life is not good. Plus it had a so much excess wiring. I returned it and bought this off of amazon and it is amazing. It paired within 10 seconds and transmits with barely noticeable no static, transmits far better than the 50 dollar thing I got from Wal-Mart or the FM transmitter I had for my iphone. I put my phone onto pandora, plug in the charger and set it down and if a song comes up I want to skip, I can just hit the forward button on the flexSmart unit which can be easily adjusted to any position for your hand.
I love this thing, its not obtrusive, theres not a ton of excess wiring, just the gooseneck and if you want to charge it simultaneously you can just plug it into the usb port with the included 6 inch wire or use your own. The calls come in clear and great too, just as good as any bluetooth headset.
I highly recommend this if you dont have an auxiliary port in your car stereo, I was considering getting the gomadic one which is only 5 dollars cheapers, but has so much more wiring and the typical inconvenient control module built into the wiring. I'm really glad I got this one, I'm about to drive from DC to Portland and this thing will make the trip much more bearable and its not an eye sore in the car.
