Sony ICF-M88B S2 Sports Bicycle Radio with Cycle Computer and Digital AM/FM Tuning Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This radio is almost exactly what I was looking for. Its water resistant design is sleek and reassuring. The speaker is loud enough for normal riding conditions. The backlit LCD and digital tuning are very nice. The bike mount is well designed - it is very simple to quickly detach the radio to take it with you. The FM antenna forms a hard rigid handle on the bottom (not shown in picture) which is nice for carrying.
That said, I have a few complaints. First, the FM reception is pretty poor compared to my car radio (in the same locations). I haven't tried working with the AM band much, so I can't say if it is any better. I would be willing to endure a larger model or more batteries to get better reception.
Second, there's no line-in jack for attaching an mp3 player. This might have been a conscious decision to preserve the water resistant design, but I would have liked to see it just the same. Of course, if you get a radio transmitter for your mp3 player, then you're golden.
Third, $50 is expensive for a portable radio. I would have been willing to forgo the bike computer functions for a less expensive bike mount radio.
Fourth, the wire going to the wheel sensor is kind of short and there's no way to extend it short of splicing the wire.

Sony MZNH600D Hi-MD MiniDisc Walkman Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This Player is very nice and capacity is OK for a removable media, however the whole Hi-MD---OpenMG----SonicStage---ATRAC is very inconvenient to use.
I will summarize:
PROS:
-ATRACplus algorithm sound decent at 64kbps, comparable to MP3 at 128kbps in my opinion. There is also a 256kbps option which sounds very good, but files are pretty big for the Hi-MD capacity, makes it inconvenient.
-The advertised price for the Hi-MD blank disks is ok, around $7.
-Price compares to that of the MiniIpod or some Flash MP3 players, however this is "supposed" (read below) to be upgradeable by buying more blank Hi-MDs
-Runs on AA battery.
-You can run with it and get no skips.
CONS:
-You MUST use SonicStage software to transfer files to / from the MD.
-No MP3 support on the unit, only plays ATRAC. MP3s are transcoded by the PC software.
-SonicStage is a little bit unreliable.
-You CAN NOT upload songs from MD to your PC. So you can't use the MDs as a backup of your PC music collection, because if your PC fails, you can't upload the songs again.
-Even if you encode songs in ATRACplus with SonicStage, you can't move the files to another PC. And I'm not talking about illegal moving, you might have more than one PC.
-You can only play (so far) ATRACplus files with Sony's software (in your PC, I mean).
-Hi-MD blank discs are scarce, not even sony online store has them in stock at the moment of this review.
I think this unit is a good alternative to a Flash based MP3 player of medium capacity (256-512MB) if you can find it for less than $200.
For a little more than this you can get a 4/5 GB HD player like the MiniIpod and save the hassle of the propietary format, algorithm, rights protection format (OpenMG) and having only one choice of software.
I think Sony could have made a good product but it's taking the wrong path towards protection of copyrights. They shouln't do so at the expense of reducing the product functionality and reliability.

Sony MZ-DN430PSBLK Psyc MiniDisc Network Walkman (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The best thing about these players? The battery life! You'll get 45-55 hours on a single Alkaline battery-and this is TRUE battery life folks. Because this little guy operates on alkaline batteries, it will truly last up to 50 hours of usage, unlike Li-ion or regular rechargeable players (like the ipod, Zen, etc). Those devices advertise 12 to 20 hours, HOWEVER, if you don't use it for a week, the battery will be dead. Rechargeables have a horrible discharge rate, and regular flash or hd based mp3 players use those stupid "instant-on" features that make the problem worse, after "power off" they go into a power-trickling sleep mode. How stupid. I can't tell you how often I tried to listen to my fully charged ipod only to find that the battery drained itself because it sat for a week after I charged it, GRRR! That problem does not exist with these players, which makes a HUGE difference. If you listen to it for an hour one night, and pick it up 3 months later, you'll have 44 hours to go! Just excellent.
Also, be sure to download the new SonicStage software from Sony (v3.3). It no longer imposes transfer restrictions. That's right, you can transfer your MP3s, waves, wma's, etc until the cows come home. And when you want to delete the tracks from the player, just delete. No more of that "check-in, check-out" crap from the early days of SonicStage. Plus the interface has been much cleaned up and is actually a joy to use (wow, I can't believe I just said that about SonicStage).
MiniDiscs are cheap folks, You can get them for about a buck-fifty a piece.
Be aware that this thing only plays ATRAC3 encoded files, which means that when you transfer songs to it, it will automatically transcode everything to ATRAC3 (regardless of your source: CD, WAV, MP3, WMA, etc-but luckily it DOES support just about every popular music format). You will get to choose the quality of the transcode/transfer (132kbps LP2 or 64kbps LP4). On average, I fit about 3 albums using LP2 mode. Sometimes I'll have to prioritize which albums I want LP2, then make the 3rd album LP4. LP2 sounds as good or better as a 128kpbs MP3.
Any bummers? Sure, there is one: The player's only power source is the alkaline battery. It does not get power from the USB port (if it did, this thing would be flawless IMHO). Unlike normal playback, recording uses mucho amperage from the battery. I recommend that for recording you stick a NiMH rechargeable in it. This will negate the problem. If you don't do that, expect to toss out your Duracell after 2 or 3 discs worth of recordings (I'm serious). Save your precious disposable Alkalines for the sweet 50 hours or so of playback.
I wrote a review more than a year ago and gave it 4 stars then, however today, a year later, I'm giving it 5. That's gotta mean something...
As little as you're likely to spend on one of these original MD (not Hi-MD), I doubt you'll be disappointed, just don't forget to download the latest sonic stage (don't even bother with the disc that comes with it, the v3.3 download will be all you need).
Later dudes-
RMaldonado

Sony D-FJ003 CD Walkman with AM/FM Tuner (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I wanted the reliability and quality of a Sony, and a CD player AND radio in one unit was very important to me, but I did not want to pay a lot as not too long ago I had purchased a Panasonic CD player/radio, and the CD player conked out on me pretty rapidly. This Walkman is durable (I have dropped it a few times, and the CD didn't even skip when dropped, and the unit still works wonderfully!). It is also relatively simple to operate. However, I do not like the buttons or display window much. The buttons are hard to press one-handed, and the display is hard to read most of the time. The buttons and display are located on the edge/circumference of the Walkman rather than on the nice, broad top, making it difficult to access them. NEVERTHELESS, if you want a quality Sony product at a good price and you aren't terribly bothered by button or display ergonomics (I am not), this is a Walkman for you. Great value for the money!

(More customer reviews)Although some of the products in this bundle kit were useful, the wall plug was not the correct volts, which makes using the charger or speaker dock iffy. Sometimes they don't even work at all. The earphones were usable, but the pads to keep them from hurting your ears fell off in a couple days. I would suggest spending a little more for a little better quality.

Sony D-SJ303 S2 Sports CD Walkman Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This is a nice sturdy CD walkman that is excellent for exercising like jogging, stair stepping, aerobics...etc. It has a heavy duty snap cover to keep the CD in place so it will never open and fall out if dropped. You could probably throw this thing against the wall and it wouldn't break. The sound is great with extra bass boost x 1 and x 2. The program button to get it to turn on and advance the music tracs was alittle confusing until I read the directions. The ear buds are alittle funny to get used to, they fit inside the ear with an ear "hanger" but sound very good once you fit them in. The only con for me is an arm band. I wanted a CLIP on the back to clip it onto my shorts but instead a wrist band so you can't sit down and write or do anything with your hands unless you take it off. It is almost too big to put into shorts pockets too. I ended up getting a x-large safety pin to hang it from my shorts wasteband (belt loops would work if I had them) then you could fasten the velcro band around the belt loop. Hopefully they will put a belt clip on the next release of this fine walkman. I do recommend it if you don't mind wearing it on your wrist or having it bang around your belt area. I paid about 68.00 from it on Amazon with fast free shipping.

Sony D-NE320PSWHI Psyc MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman (Electric White) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Even though I love my Sony NW-HD3 20GB MP3 player, when I listen to my beloved classical music collection, I still much prefer CDs, since when it comes to sound quality, MP3 simply cannot match the original CD recording. This Sony CD player is great for classical music (as well as jazz and vocals, or anything that an audiophile loves). You can feed the output to a high-end amplifier and get unbeatable sound. Or use a good pair of headphones.
This CD/MP3 player is also great for books-on-CDs. Ripping CD audiobooks is a pain and a tedious process. So it's simply easier to listen to the CDs direcly, and this lightweight, stylish, easy-to-use CD player is just PERFECT for that. And it runs for days on a single AA battery. (Hint: get Panasonic's new Oxyride AA batteries for double the life of even the best alkalines.)
I just love this portable CD player. If you are also an audiophile or an audiobook lover, this is perfect for your needs.
The only minor gripe is the player doesn't support WMA, which would have been even more fantastic for ripped audiobooks (better quality, smaller files). MP3 still takes too much space at the usual 128kbps bitrate. If I were to rip, I'd want to rip into 48kbps WMA and would still get great sound quality. (But I don't have the patience to rip anyway...)
BTW, this player (and the black version) are actually cheaper on Sony's consumer website, sonystyle dot com, where it sells for $49.95. I should have checked there first.
UPDATE: I was happy to discover that the inline remote control that comes with the D-NE320 also works on my Sony NW-HD3 20GB MP3 player. Awesome!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Sony D-NE320PSWHI Psyc MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman (Electric White)

Combining a lightweight body, stylish good looks, and an impressive array of technical features, this Sony Psyc CD Walkman is a great fit for music fans of all stripes. The Walkman boasts an intriguing dimpled cover encircled by a translucent greenish ring, giving it a high-tech yet playful look that's quite unique among personal CD players. The flashy appearance extends to the matching clip remote, which lets listeners control the device with their thumb while exercising, and the pair of stereo headphones. More significantly, the device is far more than just a straightforward CD player, with compatibility for MP3, ATRAC3, and ATRAC3PLUS formats when burned onto a CD-R or CD-R disc. ATRAC3PLUS is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3PLUS, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting users select the right balance between fidelity and storage space. The end result is a huge increase in CD-R/RW capacity, as each disc can hold as many as 490 ATRAC3PLUS songs when compressed to 48 kbps.
To assist listeners in managing the ATRAC3 and ATRAC3PLUS files, Sony has included a copy of its SonicStage software with each Psyc CD Walkman. The simple-to-use program helps you create your own music compilations on CD-R/RW media using your computer's CD burner. The software is also compatible with Sony's Connect Music store, which offers an extensive online music library with a huge catalog of songs available for quick and easy download. Once the songs are burned to a disc, listeners can glean track, album, and artist information from the Walkman's three-line LCD text display, which comes with multi-language support for greater versatility.
As with any good personal CD player, the Psyc CD Walkman offers anti-skip protection in the form of Sony's Skip-Free G-Protection technology, which helps the device quickly recover from both horizontal and vertical shocks to improve the listening experience. G-Protection is particularly valuable while jogging, skating, or pursuing other outdoor activities. The Walkman's audio performance stems from such features as its Digital Mega Bass Sound, which produces rich, deep bass tones with extremely limited harmonic distortion; Sony's Parametric Equalizer II, which gives listeners extremely precise control over the tonal balance; and a two-position Automatic Volume Limiter System, which consistently maintains the volume output at levels below the distortion threshold so that the sound is always clean and precise.
Additional features include a five-direction control key, which gives you single-button control over five individual functions; 18 playback modes, including repeat, program, and random; and an automatic shutoff feature that powers the player down when it's not in use to conserve battery power. The Walkman runs for up to 41 hours on a single AA battery and comes with a one-year parts warranty.
About Sony Connect Music Store and ATRAC3plus Sony's Connect Music store offers one of the most extensive music collections online. Customers can choose single tracks or entire albums from independent and major-label artists for purchase and download. Sony's proprietary ATRAC3plus is an advanced audio compression and Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology offering multiple bit rates that allows you to create music compilations tailored to your listening preference. Songs downloaded and burned onto CD-R/RW media using ATRAC3plus technology can be played on any device that supports ATRAC3plus.

Sony TCM-150 Cassette Recorder with Automatic Recording Level Control Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've been using this Sony for recording church services for a couple years now. Obviously, this is not a high-tech operation. I convert the tape into digital format for editing on my PC to create CD's. I've been able to make some great tapes so far and I'm recording in a huge "cathedral" type church. For the size and cost, I think it's great. I don't think I'd use it for listening to music as the microphone is rather "noisey". I recommend this for persons who aren't ready to make a major investment in high-tech recording equipment.

(More customer reviews)After 80 miles of sweaty Florida running and at least two monsoon style thunderstorms I am happy to say they are working great. No issues, easy to load using Windows Media Player, light, comfortable, charge quickly and overall a great purchase. The controls are slightly more tactile than the iPod shuffle but easy to use and very intuitive. And best of all you can get them at Wal Mart for $49.99. Just make sure the package says waterproof, some places might have the old model still on sale.UPDATE: 6 months and still going strong. I would have been on my third iPod Shuffle by now. I've read a few of the reviews and can see how some people might have issues with the earbuds staying put. In my case it hasn't been a problem and my ears are almost as big as the presidents. I've had them on runs as long as 53 miles without a problem. Do make sure you buy the current sweatproof/waterproof version. The previous model was not waterproof and from the reviews I read they died as quickly as an iPod.
